Wonder
By R. J. Palacio
Wonder was a book I first read 2 years ago, and over the years, I just couldn't stop re-reading it. The kids at my school call this book "childish", "horrible," and "weird just like the kid in the book." I think just the opposite. August is a normal kid on the inside, but not on the outside. His face has a 'deformity', which is pretty much one of the best words I could think of to describe it. Wherever he goes, people get frightened of him, scream, and run away. August always wanted a normal life and a normal face. August has always been homeschooled, but now he has to face a new challenge - actually going to school, surrounded by his peers. He was shown around by three of the 'nicest kids in school,' Jack, Julian, and Charlotte. August later finds out that Julian is not very nice at all. Once he starts going to school, August becomes best friends with Jack and people quickly start getting used to his face after weeks and months go by. He also becomes friends with Summer, and they make their lunch table, a "Summer-Only Table." At Halloween, August goes to school in a Bleeding Scream costume, when everyone thought he was going in a Boba Fett costume. August overhears Jack talking to Julian about their friendship. Jack said some very uncaring remarks about August, which he didn't really mean. But August got hurt and decided to not to be friends with Jack anymore. He was so hurt that he wanted to quit school, but his sister Via, convinces him not to. His sister Via was the one who had stuck up for him through thick and thin. Jack is very confused to why August doesn't talk to him anymore (since he didn't know it was August in the Bleeding Scream costume.) He asks Summer (who August had confided in) and Summer says, "Bleeding Scream," but Jack doesn't understand. Later, when Jack and August are paired for a science project. Jack pieces together the whole thing and realized that August was the person in the Bleeding Scream costume. Then, when Jack is talking with Julian and Julian calls August a freak, Jack punches Julian, defending his friend. Julian's mom takes it out on August instead, saying that August shouldn't even be in Beecher Prep. Meanwhile, August learns that Jack stood up for him and they become friends again. There are many characters, and each character takes a turn telling the story, so there are many chapters about the characters, side-stories, kind of. In these chapters, August and Via's dog, Daisy, dies. It is very sad and whenever I read it, I keep crying because of their sadness. Via also stars in a play and makes up with her friend Miranda, who she had separated from earlier in the book. Near the end of the book, the whole fifth grade (the grade that August is in) takes a trip to a nature reserve park. While August and Jack are in the woods, some seventh graders insult August, calling him "Gollum" and "Freddy Krueger", which was similar to the insults my friends said about August. Miles, Amos, and Henry, who were formerly friends with Julian, stood up for him. This reminds me when my friends and I all stood up against a bully, who was a common enemy. In the end of the book, we learn that Julian will not be returning to Beecher Prep in the fall. Also, as the school year finishes, there is an award ceremony. In the award ceremony, the principal gives a speech on how someone in this room accomplished great things, and overcame a lot of things. The last award in the book was given to August because he overcame everything, even with so many obstacles thrown in his way. I also want to give a special mention to the quotes in the back of the book, and one (said by August) especially moved me. "Everyone should get a standing ovation at least once in their life, because we all overcometh the world." It was beautiful. To conclude, this book moved me to tears. It was heartwarming, it was beautiful, it taught a wonderful lesson, got me emotional, was hilarious at some parts and was very touching. "This book is a wonder." - Myself.
The Heroes of Olympus, Book One The Lost Hero (new cover)
By Rick Riordan
Imagine if the greek gods were real, and were still alive today. Imagine if there were demigods, roaming the Earth, that we humans knew nothing about. Well, in The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan, you get to see what a world like that would be like; through the demigod’s points of view. In The Lost Hero, each character is facing a different conflict. Earlier in his life, Leo was tricked by the evil primordial god of the earth Gaea to use his fire powers (An attribute that is very rare for a son of Hephaestus to have) for bad. Gaea manipulated his firepower so that he burned down the mechanic shop his mom-owned, and his mom died in the fire. So now he doesn’t want to use his fire powers in fear that he will hurt someone again. Jason lost his memory, so he can’t remember anything that's happened before he woke up on a school bus. Piper is sad because she remembers that Jason and her were boyfriend and girlfriend, but none of the relationship was real, it was just a trick of the mist (the mist basically hides the gods, demigods and greek monsters from humans, although some humans have a gift to see through the mist). The setting of the book is in the USA, in modern times, and for most of the book at a camp called Camp Half-Blood; which is a camp for demigods of greek gods, which all of the main characters are. The main antagonist in the book series is Gaea. Gaea is the Greek primordial goddess of the Earth, which means she was created near the beginning of time. She has been asleep for eons but is now waking up to overthrow the gods. Basically, a lot of the enemies that the main characters face that aren’t Gaea are working for Gaea, like the giant Enceladus, who was keeping Piper's dad captive on Mount Diablo; that giant was working for Gaea. One of the most important memory moments of the book was when Jason got most of his memory back and remembered that he was a son of Jupiter, which is the roman version of Zeus, which means he is Roman and not Greek. This memory moment then makes all of the characters have the biggest aha-moment of the story that sets the scene for the next book in the series. Overall, The Lost Hero is a great book and I would recommend it to anyone who has finished the Percy Jackson series and is left with the feeling of wanting more, or, for anybody who is interested in greek mythology and a great and hard-to-put-down book.
The One and Only Bob
By Katherine Applegate
This heartwarming children's novel tells the story of Ivan, a silverback gorilla who has spent 27 years in captivity at a mall, living a life confined to a cage. Ivan is an introspective and artistic gorilla, spending his days painting and watching the world around him with a sense of detachment and quiet acceptance. Ivan shares his space with other animals, including Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog who often sneaks in to keep him company. Despite his confined existence, Ivan harbors a deep-seated optimism and a longing for something more. His perspective shifts dramatically when Ruby, a young and inquisitive elephant, joins the mall. Ruby's presence reignites a sense of purpose in Ivan, compelling him to take action to secure a better future for her. This novel is celebrated for its profound themes of friendship, hope, and the quest for freedom. It has received widespread acclaim, including the prestigious Newbery Medal for its contribution to children's literature. Overall, I loved reading this book. You should read it too!
Blood on the River: James Town 1607
By Elisa Carbone
This book is the best book I have ever read in my life! It is so funny and exciting. My favorite character is Captain John Smith, he is strong. I love his butt-kicking attitude. He is a complicated character. I love how in the beginning Samuel doesn’t trust anyone. I recommend it to anyone in the world.

Divided We Fall (3 Book Series)
By Trent Reedy
Did you ever want read a book that is very suspenseful and you won't be able to put down. Well then Divided We Fall by Trent Reedy is definitely your next realistic fiction book. My rating of this book would be 4 stars out of five because I liked how's suspenseful, it was but it could be a little slow in some parts. Divided we fall is about a 17 year old kid named Danny who enlists in the Idaho national guard. He is deployed to stop rioting in the streets. During his mission a civilian throws a rock at him with causes him to jerk his gun. This causes a huge blood bath leaving Danny to blame. Danny then is on the run from the Feds throughout the book. For example it was really suspenseful when Danny was crossing the Idaho border, and hiding in his truck when they searched the car so they wouldn't find him. It was kind of boring in the story when Danny was at home just talking to his mom and trying to get her less stressed. In a way I would say this book is a little bit like divergent because the government does turn against the soldiers. Trent Reedy has also written a second book in the series called a fallen nation. Overall a reader who would enjoy this book is anyone who likes war books and dystopian mixed into one.
