Wakefield was once an ordinary town-that was before the monster apocalypse took place. 42 days ago, the town was hit by waves of zombies, Dozers, Windged Wretches and a lot more monsters. 13-year old Jack Sullivan has been living in his tree-house ever since that day, when his foster family took off without him(he doesn't miss them). He is actually having fun in his tree house. He has armed it with catapults and moats, and has video games and supplies of Oreos and Mountain Dew from nearby abandoned stores. He gets to fight monsters and take action-filled photos just like he always wanted. The only thing is that he wishes he knew where his best friend Quint is, and he wants to rescue his crush June (wherever she is). One day he uses his Walkie, and finds Quint! Quint has been staked out at his own house, and has been busy with science experiments and preparing Big Mama(a super-awesome car), for fighting monsters. Eventually Jack and Quint find an old bully Dirk, and the three team up. But Jack is dedicated to finding June and rescuing the damsel in distress. All the while he has to avoid Blarg, an interestingly smart monster who has it out for Jack. Will he succeed and survive in this new world? The story is told in a mixture of text and black-and-white comic book illustrations that is easy to read and follow along. I really liked the science involved in some of their adventures, like when Quint outfits Big Mama for battle. I recommend this book to elementary and middle school boys. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

The Glass Gauntlet is the second book in the Blood Guard series. Ronan Truelove barely made it out alive when he first encountered the Bend Sinister and its head-who happens to be his father. Now he is determined to become part of the good guys, otherwise known as the Blood Guard. The Blood Guard is a secret society with some pretty awesome abilities that are dedicated to protect the Pure. The Pure are 36 souls who are necessary to the world's survival. And his best friend Greta happens to be a Pure-although she doesn't know it. Ronan is sent on his first mission with Greta and their friend Sammy along with one of the Guard, Jack. But the trio aren't thrilled about it. Their assignment is to visit a strange school-and take a series of tests called the Glass Gauntlet while Jack searches for an old relic. Where is the adventure in that? Turns out, more dangerous than they thought. They aren't taking boring pencil-and-paper tests, but are instead facing off in heated competitions with ruthless opponents. Everyone is more than they seem. Who can Ronan trust? This book was very adventurous and had high-stakes. I never knew what was going to happen next, and there were twists and turns around every corner. I can't wait to read the next book! I recommend this book to adventure lovers, and fans of the first book. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Be warned-this book is not for the tidy! Be prepared to get your hands dirty and have a blast(literally in some cases) doing it. This book was filled with 70 fun-filled experiments. Some of the projects include glowing goo, toilet volcanoes, rocket balloons and many more! I really liked the explanations for each project. They were detailed, but they were simple to understand. One feature I especially like in this book is that in the table of contents any experiments that adult help is needed are in red. I think this book is geared towards middle-schoolers and even high-schoolers. I would not suggest this book for individual younger students, but they could assist experiments and watch. I recommend this book for kids who love science and experiments. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

snicker9's book review was featured in Fablehaven Book of Imagination.
Fablehaven Book of Imagination by Brandon Mull is an activity book that could can do by yourself, or there are activities to do with friends. Activities in this book include pictures to color, riddles, recipes, mazes, origami, crafts, and drawing tutorials. There are also photos of Brandon Mull, some of when he was a kid, and some of when he was doing research for his books. One feature of this book is you get to invent your own preserve for magical creatures. You can draw a map, make up code names for you and your friends, and combine your own potions. One fun thing I especially liked is that there are codes throughout the book that you need the Fablehaven series to solve. Each code has four numbers; the book number, the book page, the line, and the word. When you solve all the codes you put them in order and you get a secret about Brandon Mulls new series Dragonwatch! I also love the quote pages by famous people and characters from the Fablehaven series. There are so many different aspects of this book, that I couldn't cover them all. But I really enjoyed working on these activities. I recommend this activity book to fans of all ages of Fablehaven. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Hamster Princess: Harriet the Invincible is about a hamster princess. Just like Aurora, otherwise known as Sleeping Beauty, when she was a baby an evil fairy Ratshade has cursed Harriet Hamsterbone. Except Harriet’s curse is that at age 12 she will prick her finger on a hamster wheel and fall into a deep sleep. Luckily the fairy god-mice are present, and give their three gifts: that Harriet will not have to eat or drink while she is sleeping, that brambles will grow around the castle to protect the sleeping princess(something that Harriet’s father the King is quite worried about), and that if a prince should kiss her she would wake up. Unlike most princess’s who would dread the curse, Harriet is thrilled when she learns of it. Because that means that until she is 12 years old she is invincible, and can do all the high-risk things she has dreamed about. No more princess lessons for her. So, until she is 12 years old Harriet lives a life of adventure, protecting the land, and becomes known as Crazy Princess Harriet. But when the curse finally arrives things go a little...unexpected. Harriet tricks Ratshade into touching the cursed hamster wheel, and she goes into a deep sleep. But to Harriet’s alarm everyone else in the castle falls asleep as well. So Harriet sets off on another adventure (although this one she must be much more careful as she can now be killed), with her trusty riding quail Mumfrey to find a way to save her kingdom. Hamster Princess was an unique re-telling of Sleeping Beauty. I liked that the author mixed elements from the original fairytale with her own twists. The illustrations in this book sometimes seemed to interrupt the flow of the story, especially when you had to look for dialogue, but other than that they were usually very humorous. I recommend this book to elementary girls. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Once Lilith Shadow was an ordinary House Shadow princess with no prospects for life. But then when her family is murdered, she becomes the last member of House Shadow, and becomes the ruler. For a little girl this is a daunting role. And the fact that her region is weak and surrounded by possible enemies makes things no easier. Not to mention the fact that she is still being forced into a marriage to the horrible prince from the kingdom of light. If only her father had taught her magic as well as her brother, then she would be able to save her realm. As it is, Lilith must break the rules, and learn the magic of the undead-even if she is a girl. Thorn is the son of an outlaw and he has been captured in slavery. When Tyburn, an executioner for House Shadow, buys him from his master, he is forced to make the decision to stay with Tyburn-for a whole year and one day. But all he wants is to be free. When Thorn arrives at House Shadow he meets Lilith. Will two people who come from different worlds be able to work together to reach their dreams? Much of this book is about the art of nethermancy, so if that makes you uncomfortable this is not the book for you. It was a book filled with adventure and dark magic. I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars, not because it wasn't written well or hair-raising(it certainly was), but because it wasn't my style or preference.
