Orphan Island
By Laurel Snyder
This is an absolutely amazing book by beloved author Laurel Snyder. Many of my friends said that they didn't like the book because of how it ended, since it ended on a total cliffhanger with many questions left unanswered. I personally love this book because of how it ended, I felt it was necessary to end the book where it did because otherwise you are left with nothing afterwards. This book leaves you wondering long after you have closed its pages, because you get to make up your own ending and answer your own questions. If all the questions that might have arose while reading this book were answered, it would ruin the mystery that the whole story is written around. Now that I have talked about the ending, let's go to the beginning. This book starts on a very important day, "The Changing" where the little green boat floats up to the island, carrying a small snot-faced child, who then gets replaced with the Elder on the island, who floats away to the horizon, never to be seen again. This is how it has always gone, and this is how it will always go, because it is what the rules say, "Nine on the island, orphans all. Any more, the sky might fall." But Jinny doesn't follow the rules, this year she is the Elder, and this year she has a Care, and this year she is holding on. Ever since Deen, Jinny's best friend, left, Jinny as been lost, the island her only grounding point. So when it is her turn to step into the little green boat, she doesn't. Things start going wrong all over the island, things that have been so predictable in the past, suddenly turn unpredictable, things on the inside of Jinny, and on the outside. Even though Jinny is confused, she is the Elder and she has to fix this, because it was her that caused it. I love this book because it covers topics that aren't usually mentioned in books aimed towards children, but are bound to happen no matter what. I think there is a deeper message to this book, which is that you can't hold on too long to your childhood because life will keep on moving on around you and within you, and you have to become more responsible, because you will get more responsibility. This book is good for kids 10 and up, and even if you think you won't like the ending I still encourage you to read it because there is still the whole book left that can get you thinking and get you questioning.
Piecing Me Together
By Renée Watson
Jade has attended a private school far away from her poor neighborhood for several years, and she tries to make the most of every opportunity she has. One of those opportunities is being invited to Women to Women, a mentorship program. But this opportunity doesn't seem like a positive to Jade, especially as she learns more about her mentor Maxine and their differences become more and more obvious. I loved this book! I felt like I was feeling Jade's emotions as she was navigating school troubles and relationships at home and with friends. The narrative was authentic and descriptive. I recommend this book to older kids, especially girls. I think that some of the plot would be harder to comprehend for younger kids. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
Every Soul A Star
By Wendy Mass
Ally loves stars, and owns the place where the next eclipse is going to happen. And after her parents just told her that Bree and her family were going to take over the place after the eclipse, she's crushed. Great, just great. Bree sooo doesn't want to be there. I mean, seriously, this is her social life down the drain, because she has to stay after the eclipse to do what? Own the place, and be cut off from civilization. For three years! Great, just great. As for Jack, well, he failed science class, and this was his ticket out of summer school. He doesn't have high hopes, but maybe this will be different. Just maybe.

This was an okay book...So Hayley is still hanging out with Meghan, and Artie is starting to hang out with her too, because her drama friends have ditched her. Hayley's mom, sister, and her are also in their new home which is upstairs from her grandma's tea shop. One day during detention, Meghan comes up with a crazy idea...to have a talent show at the school. Hayley isn't very sure about it, while Artie doesn't want to do it. But before they have the show, they have to get Ms. Lang's; the drama teacher's approval first, and Ms. Lang doesn't really Meghan, Hayley, and Artie. Chloe's friend: Rupert is also moving away...
The Shadow Thieves (The Cronus Chronicles)
By Anne Ursu
This is a great book with a modern take on Greek mythology. Overall, it had strong characters and a strong, if not chaotic plotline. Comparable with Percy Jackson and the Olympians. (It's an especially good book during a long, somewhat painful Jewish holiday in which ALL of your mom's half of the family crams into your grandmother's house for three straight days and you literally have nothing to do. Oy vey.)
Outbreak (The 39 Clues: Super Special, Book 1)
By C. Alexander London
This new installment in the Cahill family secrets certainly lives up to its predecessors. Dan and Amy Cahill are having fun living with their cousins and pulling off secret operations, and taking turns being the leader of the group. Then one day the CIA knocks on their door-they have a new mission. The government had been working on a top-secret disease that could knock out millions. But it was stolen by one of their own, the traitor Sinead Starling. So Dan, Amy and the other Cahills set off on an adventure to retrieve the poison and try to find out what Sinead Starling is about to. But finding out the truth might be harder than they thought, and there are others out there against the Cahills. Will the Cahills be able to stop the outbreak of a disease so powerful that it could wipe out the world? And find the truth about their rogue cousin? One part I liked international places in this book-specifically Cuba, which Sinead is targeting. The government plays a big part, and the tense relationship between the US and Cuba as well. It just made everything a little bit more interesting and tricky. Like other books in the 39 Clues, Super-special Outbreak is hair-raising, with with twists around every corner. I couldn't put it down! I hope there are more coming! I recommend this book(and this series), to anybody 4th grade and up. I believe for most younger than that the book would be too violent. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
The Genius Files: Mission Unstoppable
By Dan Gutman
Novel Pending
This book was surprisingly good. My family and I go on lots of long car trips and we like to listen to audiobooks, but it can be very difficult to find stories that match all of our interests. Since this site is just for the book itself I won't rate the audiobook itself (read by Micheal Goldstrom) but I have to say it was delivered wonderfully. I also won't go into the plot either because, for one thing, there's a summary right there, and I don't want to spoil anything. The Genius Files, as a series overall, can get monotonous. You could say the story is broken into chapter clusters, which all go about the same way. The McDonalds have been driving for hours when Mrs. McDonald suddenly announces an oddball tourist trap that she can use on her popular and ridiculous site, Amazing but True. Dr. McDonald, Coke, and Pepsi all protest, but end up following along anyway. Somehow or another, the twins get separated from their parents and are confronted by their health teacher, Mrs. Higgins, or the nefarious "Bowler Dudes" who attempt to kill them in an absurd way, (including being trapped in a burning school, getting buried alive in the Singing Sand Dunes, getting lowered into a bubbling vat of SPAM, getting shocked to death with electricity, lowered into boiling oil, and having a variety of things dropped onto their heads including a chest of drawers, a concrete brain, and a dead cow.) but they escape, and Coke rips his shirt in the process. Despite the cookie-cutter format, it can be said that the book is full of tidbit trivia, spot-on humor, and defiant action. I would recommend to upper-elementary kids and families looking to have a good time. I would give it four and a half stars, but say in this instance, it rounds up.
Lemons
By Melissa Savage
Have you ever seen Bigfoot? Tobin Sky plans to. Lemonade LIberty Witt is a girl whose mom has recently passed away, and now she must live with her grandfather, Charlie. Here she meets Tobin Sky, CEO of Bigfoot Detectives Inc. After taking the oath, Lem is now an assistant at Bigfoot Detective Inc. They may have a clue when a resident of Willow Creek calls. Every clue gets Lem closer to solving the Bigfoot mystery, and accepting her new family. This was a cool book, with an interesting idea. I have never read a fictional book on the topic of Bigfoot. The characters were also very interesting. However, at time you cannot relate to the characters very well. You should try this book!
