Rebecca Rubin wants to be an actress. But she is Jewish, & her father believes she should be a teacher. On one Sabbath, she is jealous because only her older sisters, Sophie & Sadie, get to light the special Sabbath candles. She thinks about her best friend, Rose, who has her very own candles for the Sabbath & gets to light them. When Rebecca goes to work in Papa's shoe store, she decides to make some money of her own so she can have her own candles. When she discovers that her cousin Ana's family needs money to escape Russia, she decides to generously give up her candle money to help pay for Ana's oversea voyage. When Ana finally arrives in America, Ana's brother, Josef, is still on Ellis island. Ana worries that he will be sent back to Russia without his family. Ana goes to school with Rebecca. Miss Maloney, Rebecca's teacher, punishes Rebecca for speaking Yiddish to Ana just so she can explain teasers. Even worse, there will be a performance at school, & Ana is supposed to sing with Rebecca on stage! Rebecca doesn't want everyone to laugh at Ana's broken English---or at her. She finds a way to make the show a success, even when Ana's family moves into a tenement. Later, around Christmas, her family awaits Hanukkah. But Rebecca has a problem at school. Her family is making Christmas decorations to bring home. She is afraid her parents will be angry at her for bringing a Christmas decoration home. She decides what to do with her decoration. Meanwhile, at her apartment, she does chores for the grumpy janitor, Mr. Rossi. She feeds his pigeons & keeps an eye out for his missing cat, Pasta. This is a good book. I recommend it.

In MEET FELICITY, Felicity Merriman is expected to become a gentlewoman. But Felicity grows impatient doing "sitting down" kinds of things, unless it's sitting on a horse. One day, she goes with Father's apprentice, Ben, to deliver a bridle to Jiggy Nye, the tanner. But Felicity notices a beautiful copper-colored mare. She sees that the horse is being beaten by Mr. Nye. Felicity sneaks out every night to see the horse that she secretly names Penny. Penny doesn't trust Felicity at first, but as time passes, Penny begins to trust her more & more. Finally, Felicity can ride the uncontrollable beast. She tames Penny as if she were her own horse. She even lets Ben in on her secret because she borrows his good Sunday breeches, & Ben discovers her in the barn. But when she shows her family, Mr. Nye follows her & takes Penny back. He says he'll kill Penny before Felicity can even touch her again. Felicity must figure out a way to save Penny before it's too late---even if it might mean never seeing her again.

goodbookgirl's book review was featured in Enemy in the Fort (American Girl History Mysteries).
This book is about Rebecca Percy & her younger sister, Selinda. One night, in 1752, Rebecca is awakened by a noise outside. Her parents were awake too. They soon realized the noise was Indians, & Rebecca & Selinda had to hide in the cellar. They listened as the Indians trashed their home & took Mama, Papa, & baby Benjamin captive! Just before Rebecca & Selinda barely escape, the Indians burn their home. But later, the girls are rescued by Captain Stevens & brought to Fort Number 4---where they will be safe. They stay with Widow Tyler, the kind elderly woman who lives in the fort. Two years later, in 1754, Captain Stevens & some other men bring a white captive back to the fort. Rebecca doesn't expect it to happen, but Isaac ends up staying with HER. He can't even speak English---or can he? Although it's different having Isaac in the house, she still needs to figure out a way to free her sister from a contract she sighed to Mrs. Cutter, who's moving to Connecticut & wants Selinda to come with her. As she looks for a way to save her sister, mysterious thefts take place, & Isaac is the prime suspect. But as the thefts get worse, she finally learns the truth about him---& she comes up with a plan to save Selinda. Please read to learn more. It is a good book & a cliffhanging mystery.
