Last week, thousands of people in the city of Yokohama, Japan, watched in awe, as two humongous spiders crawled through the city streets.

The 12m high, mechanical creatures that weighed 38 tons were steered by humans perched high on their heads. They were commissioned by city officials as part of the 150-year celebration of the re-opening of the city's port, following a 200 year self-imposed trade ban by Japan with the rest of the world.

The mechanical giants, which will remain in the city for 150 days, were created by French company, La Machine, that specializes in creating marionettes so large, that they need several dozen 'puppeteers' to operate.
