Mia the Way the Cupcake Crumbles (Cupcake Diaries)

Mia the Way the Cupcake Crumbles (Cupcake Diaries)

By Coco Simon

The whole world knows that Mia Velaz-Cruz hates Mondays—well, the Cupcakers do, anyway! Every single Monday, things seem to go wrong. Burnt breakfasts, missed buses, and pop quizzes make for one of the worst days in Mia's entire life. But when Mia's cousins bring her an azabache, or good luck charm, she finds her luck turning around. The next day seems perfect: no pop quizzes, no funny business with her locker, a smooth Cupcake Club meeting, and a delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Could this good-luck charm really be the end of Mia's dreadful Mondays? It sure looks like it! Mia begins to even look forward to Mondays, feeling safe in the fact that her azabache will protect her. But when Mia's own choices begin to ruin her day, she must realize that not everything relies on luck. A beautifully-written book for all people coming-of-age!

Fashion Academy

Fashion Academy

By Sheryl Berk, Carrie Berk

This dynamic mother-daughter writing duo cannot go awry! In this zesty first book of their new series, "Fashion Academy," MacKenzie dubbed Mickey is somewhat of an outsider - well, REALLY an outsider. If you don't sugarcoat it, people would say that her fashion sense is completely unconventional. But unconventionality makes her stand out, and Mickey is ecstatic when she is accepted into the Fashion Academy of Brooklyn! But when she has a begrudging mom, health-nut aunt, wacky best friend, insanely competitive enemy, and huge fashion competition coming up, Mickey realizes that the world of fashion is harder to make a name in than ever imagined.

Katie Starting from Scratch (Cupcake Diaries)

Katie Starting from Scratch (Cupcake Diaries)

By Coco Simon

Jealousy is not a foreign feeling to Katie Brown. Her former best friend Callie deserted her, her crush George is sought out by other girls, and her current best friend Mia is undoubtedly popular with every other girl in the grade. But she feels like the feeling will never escape her, especially when she brings her maybe-someday-stepsister Emily to a Cupcake Club meeting. Suddenly, all her fellow Cupcakers are fawning over Emily's talents, neatness, everything, and envy tears Katie apart. She knows she should be happy for Emily, but can't she have just one thing she alone is good at, even if it's just baking and making recipes? It doesn't help that Mrs. Brown seems to constantly compare Katie's disorganization to Emily's put-togetherness. Sibling rivalry is never sweet, but Coco Simon's writing definitely is, and this is a magnificent book for people of all ages and backgrounds.

This is another Newbery Medal book in my collection. Sometimes, it's really confusing, but not because of varied vocabulary. Anyone who reads this book might learn a new fortune-telling trick!

Katie Just Desserts (Cupcake Diaries)

Katie Just Desserts (Cupcake Diaries)

By Coco Simon

This is my favorite book in the Cupcake Diaries series ever written by Coco Simon! In this bittersweet novel, Katie Brown's father reaches out to her after years of distance and offers an internship at his famous restaurant, Chez Donald. While Katie knows it's a great opportunity, she can't help feeling that awkwardness may ruin this job. It is a once-in-a-lifetime offer, though, so she accepts and tries it out. She begins to start warming up to the job when suddenly, she cuts her finger and needs stitches in the Chez Donald kitchen! Much to her chagrin, it's her mom's boyfriend Jeff who brings her to the hospital, not her actual dad, who mutters an excuse about "lunch hour" and "busy." Katie is extremely grateful to Jeff but feels infinitely hurt that her dad prioritized his business over her, his own daughter. So, it really comes as no surprise that Katie feels overwhelmed and insecure when she meets her dad's three new "perfect blonde" daughters. On top of it all, Jeff has decided to propose to her mom! Can Katie deal with all the changes in her life, or will these sudden disruptions push her over the edge?

Has anyone read this book? P.S. why does it look interesting when I haven't read the book.

Rescued

Rescued

By Eliot Schrefer

Rescued was a heartwarming story about two unlikely brothers John, and his pet orangutan Raja. John and Raja spent years closely together after John's business-man father brought him home as a pet. John and Raja did everything together; eat and play video games and exercise. But John and Raja are growing up, and troubles ensue. Then when John's parents are divorced, John and Raja are split up. Two years go by without them being able to see each other. Then John and his mom find out that John's dad is having financial difficulty, is moving, and selling Raja to a zoo. John goes to say a final goodbye, but finds that his companion is no longer a cute baby, but an adult orangutan who is lonely and angry. And things get even worse when John visits Raja in the zoo-and finds out it is more like a prison. So John and Raja are on the run. Will the two regain the friendship they had growing up? Will John find a home for Raja? This book was inspirational, even if it was predictable. I would recommend this book to animal lovers, and probably for older readers. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

The Magic Trap (The Lemonade War Series)

The Magic Trap (The Lemonade War Series)

By Jacqueline Davies

I've read all the books in the Lemonade Series and LOVE all of them! I like the Lemonade War a little more, but I think that the new book in the series, The Magic Trap, is REALLY good. I liked it because in the other four books you only hear and hardly see the Treski's dad but in this book he is there almost the whole time, and it is interesting how different Jessie and Evan are around him. In this book, Evan is practicing magic tricks. Their mom needs to go on a trip, and their dad stays with them. He suggests Evan throw a magic show. All is well, and Jessie and Evan are just warming up to their dad when disaster strikes and some unexpected things happen bringing the magic show to their last priority and family first. It seems predictable in the middle, but you'll never guess what happens in the end. I hope everyone will enjoy this book as much as I did!
