City of Orphans
By Avi
Back in 1890s, there is two children, their names are, Maks Geless, the 13-years-old and one girl who just saved Maks` life from the gang called, Plug Uglies Gang, her name is Waddah "Willa" Brunswick. Many months before Maks met Willa, her father, Mr. Brunswick left her, after Willa`s mother`s death, so I think that Willa and Mr. Brunswick are father and daughter for each other. The name of Waddah is from Germany, then when Willa moved to U.S. her name is changed to the name of Willa. Maks` sister, Emma, was arrested, taken to the jail, because some rich man, (possibly Mr. Brunswick) accused her of stealing the watch, for which Emma didn`t, so, the Geless family relied on Maks and Willa about solving the mystery of Emma`s arrest. Maks and Willa met an detective, Mr. Donock, who is almost deaf, was gravely ill but he did teach Maks how to be a boy detective. There`s a gang what is called "Plug Uglies Gang", its leader, Bruno, and his gang was after the "newsie" (the newspaper kids). Then in the ending, the two men, Bruno and Mr. Brunswick was killed, Bruno shot and killed Mr. Brunswick and Mr. Packwood (Mr. Donock`s detective friend) shot and killed Bruno, in the hotel what called, Waldorf Hotel. This book shows the readers about 1890s and the children having to work, to earn some money for their families. I rate this 5 stars and I will totally recommend this book!
Holt McDougal Library, Middle School with Connections: Individual Reader Goodbye, Vietnam
By RINEHART AND WINSTON HOLT
Secrets are in the air. Water deep and gloomy, an old boat with wood that's rotting. Suspense as they boarded the boat. Worry that they would get caught before they set sail. Gloria Whelan is an American poet, short story writer, and novelist. She writes books for children and young adults. She won many awards such as the annual National Book Award for Young People's Literature in 2000 for Homeless Bird. Goodbye Vietnam by Gloria Whelan is not part of a series. This book is about a 12 or 13 year old girl named Mai who is from a small village during the Vietnamese war. When her community is threatened, Mai, who is one among many, steals away in the cover of night. Getting onto an old, crowded boat just to feel safe, She tries to escape with her family to a new world with towering buildings and a loud atmosphere. This book is a new favorite read! The main character Mai is in her early teens (12 or 13) yet her experience is so intense that she acts like an adult. The author uses her topic to escape and elaborates with many conflicts between the protagonist and the society, disease, and the forces of nature. She creates an entire persona for each character with a distinct personality. The author uses sentence structure in a way that you can almost live in the book through the sentences. Gloria Whelan brings many ideas and opinions into the short span of 14 chapters and leaves you longing for more. If you are a fan of historical fiction, action, escape, and refugees then this is the book for you! I recommend this book for ages 7-14
Stacey's Lie (Baby-Sitters Club, 76)
By Ann M. Martin
"What a tangled mess we weave when first we practice to deceive." - Sir Walter Scott. Oh, my gosh! This was probably my absolute favorite BSC book! It was so action packed and very enjoyable to read. When Stacey's workaholic father wants to take Stacey on a two-week vacation, Stacey knows exactly where she wants to go...Fire Island. That's where her boyfriend Robert is going to be vacationing with his family. Not telling her father know that Robert is going to be there, Stacey and her dad go to Fire Island, along with Claudia. But, along the way, Stacey's lies slowly begin to come to the surface. At first, they're no big deal. But after a while, Stacey's "white" lies begin to form a wedge between Claudia and Stacey's dad. So, when a surprising encounter with her father, Stacey's plan of seeing Robert begin to unravel. Soon, everyone hears about Stacey's lies and it becomes a terrible mess. I loved this book. Despite the romantic, fanciful cover, this book has a lot of heavy things. This book teaches the importance of never lying. In the book, the reader can see how Stacey's lies begin small and they don't affect anyone but later on, her lies become worse and worse. The book recognizes that lies can ruin relationships. This book was a good mixture of light romance and heavy life lessons. I appreciated that the romance in this book was appropriate for younger children (10+). I definitely think this book is a must read. It was perfect, full of good life lessons but still fun. I suggest this book if you like light romance, friendship, the importance of not lying, and of course, babysitting. Happy reading!
Echo
By Pam Munoz Ryan, Pam Muñoz Ryan
Echo is a magical and heartwarming book about a story of Friedrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania, and Ivy in California. Each have a turn to play an enchanted harmonica, which solves a puzzling quest of a Prophecy, a Promise, and a Harmonica. Even before the Harmonica ever reached the children, Otto the Messenger meets the three lost sister—Eins, Zwei, and Drei who were banished into the woods where the sun sets, and rises, but time never passes. To free the sisters, a harmonica travels from hand to hand, passed first by Otto when the time is right. By doing so, this unlocks a curse that is set upon the sisters: "A Messenger brought you about. One-and-the-same must bring you out. You may not leave in earthly form. Your spirits to a woodwind born. YOU save a soul from Death's dark door, or here you'll languish, evermore." Decades later during WW2, Friedrich finds the Harmonica which brings light in his life and goes on a dangerous journey to rescue his father. The Harmonica then travels into Mike's hands as he does his best to keep his brother with him. Finally, the Harmonica lands in California where Ivy tries to hold her family together. The Harmonica sparks hope for each child, and frees the three lost sisters, led by a Prophecy. "Your Fate is not yet sealed. Even in the darkest night, a Star will shine, a Bell will chime, a Path will be revealed." Friedrich, Mike, and Ivy comes together in a unified orchestra where they lie under the same stars, connected by the same silken thread of destiny, with their own suspenseful stories that converges into an orchestral crescendo.
Jessi's Horrible Prank (Babysitters Club)
By Ann M. Martin
When Mr. Trout comes to SMS to teach a Short Take class on computer programming, Jessi and her classmates find him to be strange. Wearing toupee and strange clothes, Mr. Trout is the perfect victim for cruel pranks. At first, the pranks are innocent; just a few spit wads and book dropping. But after a while, the intensity of the pranks goes up. The strangest part about it all, though, Mr. Trout never gets the kids in trouble. So, when Jessi is asked to play a mean prank on Mr. Trout in the SMS follies, Jessi goes along with it, not thinking about the consequence it could bring. But what a mistake. Mr. Trout takes it the wrong way and now Jessi feels terrible about what she did. This book was SUPER good. It taught the importance of always being kind to people, especially vulnerable people. Through Jessi, the reader gets to see the childlike aspect of Jessi. The mature babysitter is replaced with a mischievous sixth grader. Although still fun, this book never failed on teaching important lessons. Not only was it funny and uplifting, but it was also meaningful and interesting. This book is packed with great life lessons. It teaches the importance of even a small and seemingly funny prank can affect someone's life and even job. I thought this book was really good and a must read. I suggest this book if you like pranks, follies/plays, baby-sitting, and friendship. Happy reading!
Listening for Lions
By Gloria Whelan
It`s been a while since I last read this book but I remember it`s so good but little bit sad! This is about a girl named Rachel Sheridan who has recently lost her parents due to illness, and she didn`t want to leave her only home she has known for all of her life, Africa. She is left as a prey to her wicked neighbors. Rachel has been almost died, and her friends has been thought that she is dead instead of alive. I rate this 5 stars!
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle with Related Readings
By Glencoe Literature Library
This is amazing book! This book is about an girl named Charlotte Doyle boarding the ship, met Cpt. Jaggery, and the sailors named, Dillingham, Grimes, Morgan, Barlow, Foley, Ewing, Fisk, Johnson, and Zachariah. When Doyle met Cpt, she thought that Captain was gentleman but deserved that he to be a murderer, he killed his friend and only, Hollybrass. Most of the crew and Cpt blamed her for killing Hollybrass which Doyle did not. At first, she was a proper girl of 13 years old then in middle of the book, she is more determined to join the crew, work all day, and in the ending, when Doyle finally got home after 2-months-long voyage, she got in trouble with her father but this didn`t stop her! I rate this 5 stars! I`m definitely recommend this book! And also, I like how the author, Avi, write this book, it`s has murder, suspense, and adventure at same time! I`m literally moved with this book, it`s so GOOD!
