The Apprentice Witch

The Apprentice Witch

By James Nicol

Arianwyn has flunked her witch's assessment: She's doomed. Declared an apprentice and sent to the town of Lull in disgrace, she may never become a real witch-- much to the glee of her arch-rival, Gimma. But remote Lull is not as boring as it seems. Strange things are sighted in the woods, a dangerous infestation of hex creeps throughout the town, and a mysterious magical visitor arrives with his eye on her. With every spirit banished, creature helped, and spell cast, Arianwyn starts to get the hang of being a witch--even if she's only an apprentice. But the worst still lies ahead. For a sinister darkness has begun to haunt her spells, and there may be much more at stake than just her pride . . . for Arianwyn and the entire land.Such a amazing book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gertie's Leap to Greatness

Gertie's Leap to Greatness

By Kate Beasley

Gertie has a goal. She is going to be the best 5th grader. Her reason for her goal? So that her distant mother(who is moving away and getting married), will realize that Gertie doesn't need her. But someone else has the same goal. Enter new girl, Mary Sue Spivey, who just moved from California while her dad is filming a movie here. All of a sudden she is the most popular girl in school. She knows the most famous child actresses in the country, she knows all the answers in class, she's the teachers favorite. According to Gertie, she is just plain evil. So now Gertie must come up with a new plan. How can she become the best fifth grader ever? How can she become the smartest, the funniest, the most popular? And how can she do it while keeping her friends? I think this book was an interesting view on not-so-average families. Gertie's mom left them when Gertie was very little, but she lives just across town. Now Gertie's Great-Aunt Rae stays with her and her father and takes care of them. And Gertie's father works on an oil rig, so he is gone for two weeks and then home for two weeks. At the beginning of the book Gertie is very self-involved. However, as the book goes on there is character development, and she is a better person at the end. I recommend this to elementary students who like realistic fiction. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

VIP: I'm With the Band

VIP: I'm With the Band

By Jen Calonita

This book was really good! It's about 12 year old McKenzie(Mac) whose Mom ends up getting a job for her favorite band: Perfect Storm! She now has the opportunity to go to their every concert, see their natural behavior, and possibly get Zander to date her. All of this can happen to her because her Mom is their tour manager! But once Mac's in the tour buses and hotels, she realizes things are different. Heath is really into pranks, but is there like a brother. Zander isn't as perfect and modest as he seems on stage. And then there's Kyle. Mac always thought of Kyle as shy, timid, and a cute boy who can play guitar. But she learns more about him. He writes songs, isn't too seemingly shy, and seems to really like Mac. Or is that just Mac. Things go up and down, but the worst thing happens that will break everyone's heart: Perfect Storm might break up! But once Mac gets on the scene, she does what not even her Mom could do, get the boys to forgive and forget. Once the tour is over, Mac finally tells Kyle she likes him, and he says he likes her back. I can't wait for the sequel: VIP: Battle of the Bands!

Unidentified Suburban Object

Unidentified Suburban Object

By Mike Jung

In this book Chloe Cho is tired of being grouped in with other Asians, people not knowing the difference between Japaneses, Chinese, and Korean. And she is sick of being called another "Abigal Yang", just because she plays the violin well. And she wants to know more about her Korean background. But anytime she asks any questions her parents just change the subject. Only her best friend Shelley wants to help get answers. So Chloe is thrilled when she finds out her new teacher is Korean as well, and she is assigned a project about family history. But what Chloe finds out will change her life forever. Parts of this book were predictable. Other parts were just cheesy. The reason I rated it higher than a 1 star was because it did have good lessons on racism. Overall, I rate this book 2 out of 5 stars.

The Lunch Witch #1

The Lunch Witch #1

By Deb Lucke

If your looking for something out of the ordinary (or maybe your mother didn't pack you a lunch) check out this hilarious graphic novel. Grunhilda, a witch out of work (people just don't believe in magic like they used to), takes a job as a lunch lady. Everything is going fine until Madison discovers her secret and threatens to expose her. Beautiful black humor and plenty of awkwardness to go around. If you want a good story, you won't go hungry.

Meet the Bigfeet (The Yeti Files #1)

Meet the Bigfeet (The Yeti Files #1)

By Kevin Sherry

While this book is below my grade level - way below - I actually found it to be amusing to an extent. This story is told through the perspective of Blizz Richards, a yeti who hangs around other creatures to study them. All of them have one thing in common : they can't be seen by humans. So when Blizz's cousin disappears, ashamed after being captured on camera by one of the world's most motivated cryptids researcher, Blizz makes it his mission to find his cousin during the family reunion. He does, and things only take a more interesting turn from there. Spoiler: the picture does not make it into the hands of the 'researcher' I think that as a book for younger children, Sherry's story is a good one. Definitely something I would give to a younger sibling as a gift. However, through the eyes of a more experienced reader, the plot is a little too simple, or coincidental. In all, I would rate this with 4 stars.

Oopsy Daisy (A Flower Power Book #3)

Oopsy Daisy (A Flower Power Book #3)

By Lauren Myracle

this is such a great book. it is the second book in the "flower power" series(cheesy name, i know) and is about 4 5th grade girls with flower names. Katie-Rose is confused about why nobody else thinks boys r disgusting., while Camilla still has a crush on the geeky max. Yasaman doesn't feel ready for a boyfriend, but she is match-making their two beloved teachers...Mr. Emerson and Ms. Perez. Yazwants to get the two teachers together at the Lock-In, and she pulls in the other girls to help too. but when Ms. Perez doesn't plan on coming and Violet pulls out too, the Lock-In seems like it will be terrible. but these girls find a way to untangle themselves of this problem...
