Boxers (Boxers & Saints)
By Gene Luen Yang, Lark Pien
This book was a real page-turner. I loved this book so much that I finished it in one day. This book is about a young boy who turns into one of the leaders of a group that kills foreigners that invaded their land. This boy finally gets to the "mother ship" of the foreigners and dies fighting. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good book.
Halt's Peril (Ranger's Apprentice, Book 9)
By John A. Flanagan
AMAZING!! I'm reading it now, and now that I'm over halfway through it's just left me hanging!! It's very different than book 8, which I got kind of lost in because it wasn't as exciting or hooking as the other books in this INCREDIBLE series. It still emphasizes the Ranger's skill in camouflage and the art of unseen movement - it shows that they're not perfect archers and won't always make every shot, which I thought was good because sometimes the Rangers are so amazing that they seem unrealistic. I'm learning new skills in the woods and outdoors and even just silent movement every time I read the books and this time I'm sure I have almost the most (besides for the first book, since it's Will's first year of training). It's super suspenseful when these assassins set up to ambush the two Rangers and the young Warrior (Will, Halt, and Horace) and when the results are not as they expected, the relationship between Will, his former apprentice, and Halt his mentor, really tugged on my heartstrings. Even the friendship between Horace and Halt was very moving. It makes me have to keep reading until the end to find out what happens!! It's so cool!! I really love this books and would recommend them to anyone... no, everyone! Ranger's Apprentice is DEFINITELY my favorite series and will hopefully hold the lasting record of that until I die. LOL.
The Railroad Adventures of Chen Sing
By George Chiang
It is a very adventurous and exciting book! The story is about a boy named Sing and his older brother Bo helped building an iron railroad. They had to face many obstacles with the crew but they survived. My favourite part is when Sing saves the workers from an illness and saves Bo from a rockslide. In this book, you can learn that people can help do many hard jobs by working together to overcome obstacles. I love this book!!!
Mark of the Plague (The Blackthorn Key)
By Kevin Sands
I knew this would kill me but I went for it anyway. Why oh why do I do this to myself? Well.. it was SO worth it. The Mark of the Plague by Kevin Sands was wonderful. It had everything you need in a book, humor, action, and mystery. It’s about Christopher, an apothecary-in-progress, who is his own master. He is now in the middle of the ‘plague-age.’ He has to, now, use clues and hints left by his old master to figure out the cure for the plague, with a few obstacles on the way. This book was a definite yes for me. And I say this once again, Kevin Sands’ writing is P.E.R.F.E.C.T.I.O.N The entire plot, characters, and setting complement each other SO PERFECTLY. *Characters* Christopher was the absolute best. He is so smart and funny that you got to love him. He is such a caring and clever character that rarely makes it in Middle-grade novels. Tom was one of those ‘side-kick’ characters that aren’t really ‘side-kicks.’ The very fact that Tom is technically a side-kick doesn’t get acknowledged in the novel. Christopher, who is the main character, doesn’t treat Tom like just a person that wants to help. No. He treats Tom like his equal. Like a true friend. And that is beautiful. The friendship in this book is just..beautiful This book, This series, Kevin Sands, Are the ABSOLUTE best! So thank you for making me satisfied with such great writing and therefore killing me. Five stars from me!
Wild Bill Hickok: Legend of the Wild West (Primary Sources of Famous People in American History)
By Larissa Phillips
Wild Bill had a kind of exciting life time In the wild west. In 1837 James Butler or "Wild Bill" was born. Him and his family helped runaway slaves escape (go them!) ,helping them escape was against the law. Nobody knows the true story of how he became a sharpshooting legend of the wild west! For a year he starred in a wild west show but he quit the job and went back to the real wild west. In 1876 he was shot in the head by John McCall while playing poker. Great book has good information. Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims: Time-Travel Adventures with Exceptional Americans
By Rush Limbaugh
"Rush, rush, rushing into history!" So, you may think this is just another boring book about history. But it is far from it! Join Rush Revere, history teacher and iced tea poster-man, and his talking horse (yep, you heard that right! A TALKING HORSE!) named Liberty in their time travel adventures to important events in history, such as the Mayflower and the first Thanksgiving, which this book is about!! And let's not forget Tommy and Freedom. They're just regular kids in Rush's history class who happen to figure out Rush and Freedom's time traveling secret. When they get to the Mayflower, they are blown away. WOW, was life hard! Reading the story is like actually being there, and you get the full scoop about how life was like back then. And the first Thanksgiving is really cool, too! This book is DEFINITELY NOT your traditional history book, and also DEFINITELY NOT boring!! Written by highly rated national radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh, this book is a refreshing take on important events in the USA's history! I highly recommend this book to ages 7+ and rate it 4/5 stars.
