The Dark Prophecy (The Trials of Apollo)

The Dark Prophecy (The Trials of Apollo)

By Rick Riordan

Ahhhh…. My winter break read. Before we get started, I am just going to put it out there, Rick Riordan is an artist. (Speaking from an actual artist’s perspective). He writes with such flow and ease that it feels like he is simply moving a brush against a canvas. Too metaphorical? I know, I realized. My point is, is that Rick Riordan’s books are works of art. (Is that a better metaphor for you!?) His whole fandom is based on a sort-of fractured mythology. (That is a phrase that I just created). Now, let’s stop talking about the beautiful, enchanting works of Uncle Rick that I adore with a full passion, and start with TTOA; The Dark Prophecy. ***Characters*** As you all would know the main character is no other than (!) Lord Apollo himself, which you would know if you read the first book. In which case, WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING READ THE FIRST BOOK (AND MY FABULOUS REVIEW). Apollo (or poor pimple-filled Lester) – Apollo (or Lester) was the sort of character that you could not-not like. I loved being in his first person mind and reading how his thoughts about puny mortals (which I certainly am not) changed throughout the novel. For example- “ ‘Let the girl go,’ I whimpered through the pain. ‘Kill me and let her go’ “ And then, after his life flashed before his eyes, he thought, “I surprised myself. These were not the last words I had planned.” Meg McCaffrey- Meg was pretty, um, outgoing? She was the kind of person that didn’t really care about what will happen to her. You could say that she was Lester’s (Apollo) sidekick? But technically by the book, he really is her servant. You know what, I cannot explain this in a review, so GO READ THE NOVEL! There were other characters out there like Leo, Calypso, Emmie, and that other lady that was with Emmie that I forgot her name. Was it Jorge? Joe? Yea, it was Joe. Oh, and you can’t forget my buddy Lit! JUST LISTEN TO ME AND READ THE BOOK, YOU’LL UNDERSTAND MY JIBBERING… ***Build-up*** As I said in my first paragraph, Uncle Rick’s wonderful world is completely amazing. I, if you do not already know, am a rising author. I am trying to type a wonderful, original novel. Rick Riordan is GOALS, his writing is (I repeat) magnificent. His writing flows like paint. HE IS AN ARTIST! Okay, I’ll stop with the art references. In all, I really enjoyed this winter read. It was completely amazing and entertaining. And now, I bestow upon you a five-star rating. Congratulations, you stole Lana’s heart.

Between Two Skies

Between Two Skies

By Joanne O'Sullivan

What would you do if you had to evacuate your home? The book I am reading is Between Two Skies,The way the author wrote this book, Between Two Skies, was just amazing. Some were cliffhangers, because you wanted to know what was next. The setting was in Bayou Perdu Louisiana and new orleans, the time period is August 23-31 2005, this hurricane was a category 5 the hardest most powerful a hurricane can get, the name of this hurricane was hurricane Katrina. The protagonist is grandma, in this book is concerned because of the hurricane she tells everyone we should leave… but they end up leaving the next because it was Evangeline’s birthday. The antagonists, Evangeline’s friend is struggling because she has a choice to make because the hurricane is coming and Evangeline is telling her to leave but she is really hurting herself because she knows everyone is evacuating except for her. One of the problems is that they don’t have a lot of money and the are going to have to rent for quite some time because of what the hurricane did to their town and their house. Another problem is that all the house in the town of where they live it is 8 feet under water. I recommend this book to a reader who likes to read a little bit of sad and a little happy, overall this book is great for someone in the 7th-8th grade.

The Gold Cadillac

The Gold Cadillac

By Mildred D Taylor

The Gold Cadillac, by Milrdred D. Taylor, teaches that segregation is unfair. Wilma’s father bought a new 1950s Gold Cadillac, but it seemed to be causing problems. When he drives down to Mississippi, there looks like opposition is coming. Once, he got arrested from owning the car, because the police thought he had stolen it! Also, there were people who threw things at the car. This was all because the family was black, and that is unfair. Finally, when they had got back home he sold the Cadillac because it caused too much trouble.

Dancing Days #5 (Magic Bunny)

Dancing Days #5 (Magic Bunny)

By Sue Bentley

I just love this book. Arrow is the best bunny in the world and he is on a mission for his key's power so the dark rabbits cannot steal it. He meets a dancer named Sara Penfold and she is currently on crutches because she sprained her ankle. Arrow helps cheer her up. Her best friend, Beth, use to go to dance classes with her before she hurt herself. Beth decides to work with another girl, Olya and they audition together. One day, Sara sees a girl in a classroom dancing and she wonders her name. A gym shirt that she left behind said Tamara Blake. Sara tries a plan with Arrow to get Tamara to know her better and talk to her. Tamara says she just moved there and she got bullied at her old school for showing off. She decides to come with Sara to watch Beth and Olya's dance. They end up not making the team, but they decide to make their own team. I really like this book and you guys should read more of Sue Bentley's books. I highly reccomend.
