The Year of the Fortune Cookie (An Anna Wang novel)
By Andrea Cheng
This book is really good! I love how Anna Wang seems to be so worried, but later on loves China and doesn't want to leave.
The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom
By Christopher Healy
This story is a bunch of fairy tales in a fairy tale, but with a twist. At first I was skeptical about this book, because I am very picky and choose-y about how fairy-tales are written and executed. BUT this book, this book and its story plot... is so exquisite and on-beat. I say this because the way the author introduces the characters one by one, takes different fairy-tales and mushes them together and creates something original, funny, and rich in wholesome-ness is so impressive! The way Healy lets things sail smoothly, then hits you with an unexpected wave is what makes this book riveting and hard to put down. I'd say that this book is SO underrated. If I hadn't had it on my kindle recommendations, I never would've read it. Except, I'd be obliviously missing out on such a nostalgic and lyrical story. I've always been a sucker for fairy tales, and have read and coveted them since forever, so this really reminds me of a more sophisticated version of classics. Overall, this was a very magnetic and graceful take on what might happen after Ever After, and was super enjoyable and well-written.
Becoming Naomi Leon (Americas Award for Children's and Young Adult Literature. Commended)
By Pam Munoz Ryan
I loved this book! It was about an girl called Naomi and her brother Owen, who was born crippled. They were raised by their grandmother, since Naomi's mom took them away, but then ditched them and gave them to their grandmother. One day, their mother comes and interrupts their peaceful life (well, sort of) and tries to get Naomi back, but not Owen. At first, Their real mom, Skye is very nice. She bribes them with gifts, and she pretends to be nice. But still, she was never a good mom, and started to lose her temper and not care about them. Naomi learns that her mom never did care about them from her heart, but was just using gifts to make them like her. Naomi also finds out, while waiting at school for her mom that she was at an rehab center multiple times, and started drinking AGAIN. When Skye goes to court, saying she wants to keep Naomi, Naomi's closest family and friends go with her to Mexico to seek help from her dad. This was an one of a kind book that you MUST read! Princess Academy: Palace of Stone
By Shannon Hale
Miri Larendaughter, an Mount Eskel girl, has graduted from Princess Academy, now starting Queen Castle as new scholar. A boy which Miri has crush on is Pedar Doterson, but Miri was too shy to confess her feelings for Pedar until the ending of the book. Another boy that Miri has met, Timon Skarpson, I think, also really like her... Miri`s friend, Britta, to-be princess, which will marry an prince, Prince Steffan. In first book, Britta has revealed that she and Steffan has actually knew each other when they was young, amazing, huh? Britta and Steffan has always wanted to marry each other! Well, I don`t want to spoil this whole story for you, haha but this book is so GOOD that I became so lost in this! I def recommend this book!

The Year of the Book (An Anna Wang novel)
By Andrea Cheng
Hi, and I hope you will enjoy my review of Year of the Book. I don't understand why people are saying sort of negative things about this book. For example, one person said the main character (Anna) was too serious. If you really catch the details, there are reasons why she is pretty serious. Besides, there are some really amazing characters like Marlin from Finding Nemo and Mulan who are serious but truly awesome. Maybe Anna doesn't live up to their standards, but she's still a really amazing character. Here is the plot: Anna Wang used to be best friends with Laura once upon a time. But now, Laura tends to hang out more with her new-found friends, Allison and Lucy, instead of Anna. Anna, instead, becomes friends with Ray, and even more so, her books. Anna's mom works for a man called Mr. Shepherd who is elderly and very kind, but pretty lonely ever since his wife passed away. Anna is embarrassed seen with her mom and her cleaning supplies. Anna is also embarrassed that her mom doesn't have perfect English, but she still loves her. I can relate to this because even though sometimes my mom does things that are embarrassing to me, I still love her. Anna goes to Chinese school to learn more Chinese (Anna only knows a few words) and meets a girl named Camille. Camille, like Anna's mom, is not yet quite over the language barrier and has an especially hard time with reading, but Camille is a kind and good friend. Anna slowly starts to reconcile with Laura. Laura comes to Anna whenever her best friend Allison is mean to her, like on Halloween, when Laura has a dispute with Allison about something, Anna and Laura go trick-and-treating together. Laura later has a sleepover with Anna when she has family problems. Even though Anna has troubles of her own, which are similar to mine, Laura's troubles are much worse in my opinion. Her dad is an angry man who throws things and shouts, and even though the family doesn't want him, he keeps coming back. Laura becomes best friends with Anna once again, even turning down an offer from Allison to 'be part of the popular crowd' once again. Happily ever after :) Pros + Cons + Grading Section: The ending was amazing, in my opinion, pretty perfect, but not going to spoil it. The artwork is very quirky and very cute (the drawings done by Abigail Halpin). I love that this book is relatable. I often had to pause now and then and say, "Wow, I experienced that." or "Hey, I love that book!" I especially loved the character of Anna, who was basically my twin because I had similar friends and one of my friends is really like Laura. I also love reading and I like how awesome books have little "cameos" in the Year of the Book. (Totally get the title now.) A lot of the characters are three-dimensional, and basically it should be 5 stars. One thing I didn't like was that it was like Laura was using Anna at some parts. Like if Allison didn't invite Laura, then Anna was her second choice. It was almost like Anna was the third/fourth wheel, even when they were close. So it's 4.5 for me, but since 4.5 rounds to 5, I gave it a 5 :D ~FelicisOwl
Stand Up, Yumi Chung!
By Jessica Kim
Stand Up Yumi Chung is a great book that inspires kids of all ages to be your true self. Yumi Chung loves comedy, only her parents don't approve of it. They want Yumi to be more like her sister and focus on her education to get good job. They even send her to a tutoring place to get her prepared! However, when Yumi finds out there is a comedy club right where she lives, she can't resist going inside, and that's when things start to get weird. Yumi gets mistaken for an absent girl named Kay, and Yumi doesn't correct them. It's her chance to be who SHE wants to be, and not her parents. But what will happen when her parents and new friends from comedy camp figure out about her identity? How can she balance both her lives and not let her secret slip, especially when her family restaurant is losing money? Yumi is forced to make a choice: Either be the person she wants to be, or let her parents decide her future for her. This book has everything to show that just being yourself is enough, and you get to do whatever makes you happy in life. I rate this book 4 stars!
My Sweet Orange Tree
By José Mauro de Vasconcelos
The book takes place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the year 1920. Zézé is 5 years old and he wants to be a bow tie-wearing poet. But for now, he plays pranks on other people living in his neighborhood. Zézé puts wax on sidewalks so that people slip and fall. He's so naughty that people say he's the devil's grandson. He lives in a big family with three sisters and two brothers. They are so poor that nobody gets Christmas presents. In the book, Zézé meets many people, including Pinkie the orange tree and Seu Ariovaldo, a musician. But one day he makes a real friend, Portuga. At first, they're enemies, but as they get to know each other, he becomes a father to Zézé. The book was funny and sad, and I enjoyed reading it. The translation was also great!
