Winter Turning (Wings of Fire, Book 7)

Winter Turning (Wings of Fire, Book 7)

By Tui T. Sutherland

Not The best of the series. But still quite good. The writing is wonderful. The world Sutherland has created is vibrant and complex and oh so amazing well thought out for a middle grade series. Or frankly, for ANY epic fantasy series. I loved finally getting to see the Icewing culture, even though it was terribly depressing & must be so hard on all those poor Icewing dragonets. I'm loving how far the Darkstalker legend has come, has been expanded for the ghost stories of the terrified Nightwings in book 5. And it was great getting to know these new dragonets better. (Although I still can't figure out why they are suddenly so loyal to each other after knowing each other for like 5 days.) The story itself was well crafted and fun, with hints of "oh my god, this stuff is kinda dark, why is it for kids?" Thrown in. Like all the other "Wings of Fire" books. But, sadly, I didn't find "Winter Turning" QUITE as enjoyable as previous books. And again, sadly, I had to give it only 3 stars instead of a super excited 5 or 4. Mostly, due to Winter himself. It was painful, being stuck in his head. :( so sad, because I usually love the tortured soul, angry & sad type heroes. I found him annoying and whiney and mean. Why did Moon spend so much time telling how good & great he is? All I saw was a super whiny little dragon. A hateful dragon. I get that he spent his whole life being told to basically hate all other tribes, (& having unpleasable parents) but come on. It was a bit over the top.... And then the over the top-ness of it was undermined by how quickly he got over it all. Although I did feel how much he missed and loved Hailstorm so that was good. He just wasn't a very likable character. :( I know that they don't always have to be, but I was so looking forward to this book and this character & I felt so let down. :/ It wasn't a bad book really. It just wasn't as great as it could have been. I felt Winter could have been a great character. But really he was just obnoxious. At least I only had to deal with one book in his point of view. The series is still one of my favorites, so I look forward to reading and reviewing the next book "Escaping Peril" Recommended to fans of dragons, the rest of the series, and lovers of epic fantasy.

The Kingdom of Fantasy (Geronimo Stilton)

The Kingdom of Fantasy (Geronimo Stilton)

By Geronimo Stilton

This book’s genre is fantasy or adventure and it was written by Geronimo Stilton. This book is about a team of animals who set a journey to save a queen from an evil sleeping spell. Even though the quest was difficult and depressing, they didn’t quit. The main character is a mouse that is always frightened of anything and wants to run away because he isn’t used to the unusual things and the boiling lava. Two key events that they added to the plot is that Boils(a chameleon) gave the queen a poisoned rose that a witch gave him(which caused the queen to fall into a deep sleep), and that something strange is trying to prevent them from saving the queen. In the first chapters the animals are terrified because the mission was hard. But the father back they went they met more friends who encouraged them to keep on going. An unanswered question I have for the author is what was Enigma’s riddle about the Sphinx called? What I enjoyed the most about this book is the adventures, fun characters, and it teaches us about a kind, caring, and light heart. I would recommend this book because it is long, creative and original. Kids might like it because it’s exciting, full of morals, and it teaches you about being a caring human. It also tells you about being brave, curious, thoughtful, and generous.

Inheritance (Inheritance Cycle)

Inheritance (Inheritance Cycle)

By Christopher Paolini

Inheritance by: Christopher Paolini Reviewed by: Nick Drown Gr. 7 “Inheritance” by Christopher Paolini takes place in the ancient realm of Alagaesia where a hero’s struggle for the final battle against his antagonist Galbatorix - the evil king of Alagaesia - may or may not be successful. The kingdom of Alagaesia is a lot like the middle ages in the sense that there are castles and dragons, swords and shields. Elves, Dwarves, Urgals, and Ra’Zac roam the kingdom and make their civilizations throughout the Empire. The hero is Eragon and he is struggling to win the war against Galbatorix. Many times he has tried to thwart the mad king’s plans, and many times he has failed. Galbatorix is a usurper and his people live in fear. Eragon hopes to stop Galbatorix’s reign of terror by overthrowing him. Galbatorix seems to be winning the battles with the laughing dead - men who can feel no pain. Eragon must beat him or the Varden will die. Even though they are winning, the Empire is very worried. Galbatorix is insane, and the Varden have ACTUALLY captured two of their strongest cities: Gil’ead and Dras-Leona. The, Empire send out hundreds - even THOUSANDS of men but the Varden win most of the battles no matter what the odds. Now, because of a werecat’s prophecy, Eragon must journey to the Rock of Kuthian in order to find the power that will help him fight against Galbatorix. This could very well be the turning point of the war. What he finds there is legendary, perhaps even more than he can handle. He finds his true name and unlocks the Rock of Kuthian, which is the Vault of Dragon Souls, but, can he control what he finds? Saphira, Eragon’s great dragon, is one of the three dragons left on Alagaesia after Galbatorix’s purge and almost Extinction of Dragons. Saphira battles the two other dragons, Thorn and Shruikan, endangering her safety and the safety of her race. With two Dragons against her, can Saphira defeat her foes? However, unfortunately, if she kills them, she is the last of her kind. “Inheritance” by Christopher Paolini is a truly wonderful book and is full of action, adventure, suspense, and surprises that are unforgettable.

Mysteries in Our National Parks: Wolf Stalker: A Mystery in Yellowstone National Park

Mysteries in Our National Parks: Wolf Stalker: A Mystery in Yellowstone National Park

By Gloria Skurzynski, Alane Ferguson

Wolf Stalker is one of those books that you can't find anything bad to say about, but it's not Newbery award material. It has some charm to it, with somewhat interesting characters with whom you can relate to, accompanied by a nice, stable plot, but it doesn't stand out from the hundreds of thousands of books out there, and it'll probably never think about it now that it's done and read. You're being too harsh, you say, what with the plot being about saving a supposedly-bloodthirsty wolf, uncovering secrets, a grumpy foster kid, and an evil dude, but even with all those features, Wolf Stalker just isn't phenomenal or mind-blowing, although it does have a good message about preserving the world we live in and the animals that live in it with us. I liked it, and I'd say ages elementary through middle school will enjoy it.

Warriors: The Ultimate Guide (Warriors Field Guide)

Warriors: The Ultimate Guide (Warriors Field Guide)

By Erin Hunter

Have you ever wondered what happened to certain characters in the book series Warriors? Well, this book written by Erin Hunter states over 70 different characters! You can also see how Bramblestar and Tigerstar get their nine lives and much more! It has maps of the forest, lake, and even Skyclan in the gorge! It tells you about cats from Thunderclan, Shadowclan, Windclan, Rivervlan, Skyclan, Ancient cats, The Tribe of Rushing Water, cats outside of the clans, and even different animals! I really enjoyed this book because it took me deeper into the clans and made my fascination for them grow! It made me actually understand why some people did the things they did. If you are like me and want to find out about their stories, this is the book for you!

The Brightest Night (Wings of Fire, Book 5)

The Brightest Night (Wings of Fire, Book 5)

By Tui T. Sutherland

I think this is one of the most brilliant books to come of the series. The ending was truly satisfying. (SPOILED ALERT) but I think it was the perfect ending for all the chracters. I think Winter going off to Santuary and really finding himself is so important for him in terms of chracter growth and finding yourself. His whole life has been about the circles and rank and nobility, Now he's this free dragon that sudden;y doesn't really have a place in this world. And as frusturating as it was to see WInter join the fight, it totally makes sense and it shouldn't have gone any other way, Of course he's going to be loyal to his family. That's his whole ideology. And for Quibli. I think it was just perfect for the Jade Mountain Prophecy series to end with his POV becasie Quibliis just such a complex, intresting chracter that we get to explore as readers in this book, The fact that so much happens in just one book is incredible by itself but the readers POV is not one full of rage and revenge like WInter or Peril or scared and full of constant doubt like Turtle. I feel like this is a very close feel to the OG Dragonet Prophecy series. (Both are amazing though not comparing). And the fact that Moon chooses Quibli. We see although he's a very smart character, he still has the normal doubt over whether a girl likes him or the other dashing hero. Of course his mind would go to WInter although he's obviously in love with Moon as we can see when they arrive at the old NIght Kingdom. I think he's also the better choice for Moon because he really sees Mooon for who she is. And the fact that it leaves off on a cliffhanger. This book has so many layers and so mnay things that I can talk about this book for hours. But to sum all this up, Darkness of Dragons is one of the best books (in my opinion) out of all the WIngs of FIre books and might even be on my all time favorite list.

The Hive Queen (Wings of Fire, Book 12)

The Hive Queen (Wings of Fire, Book 12)

By Tui T. Sutherland

Getting close to the end and I'm sad. In this book we learn a lot about Cricket and her life before she met her friends. We learn why she's different and how she really feels about Blue. Lots of twists and turns abound in this installation of the story, and there is no lacking for suspense in this one either. My favorite part only gives away a small portion of the plot line but I have to mention it. They end up caring for a baby dragonet that hatches on their watch and it becomes attached to the grumpy Sundew. So much cuteness and hilariousness ensues! I so love that part of the story! Can't wait to see how it develops and if it does in the next book, which I could only get in hardcover and is sitting next to me. A wonderful series and I love it. For such a short Wings of Fire book, I found myself clinging to the pages, eager to see what was going to happen next. This series hasn't disappointed me yet, and this book certainly didn't let me down. The characters are all so lovable, especially sweet bookworm Cricket and Sundew, who grew on me as the book progressed. But what I really like about this particular arc of the Wings of Fire series is just how serious these books get. This one deals with slavery and neglectful parents in a way that I believe any reader could understand and draw their own conclusions from. And of course, what I always love about this series are the epilogues. This book's epilogue was chilling, and I cannot wait to read book 13 to see what happens next.
