It's a perfect world, where everything looks right. But ugly truths lie beneath…

Imagine a world without poverty, war or pain. A world where everything is comfortable and familiar - a world where everything is the same. No colour, no music. In such a world, Jonas is selected to be the next Receiver of Memory and is apprenticed to the Giver, an old man who stores memories from the Community’s past. As Jonas learns about violence and sadness, as well as beauty and joy, he discover the sinister truth behind his safe existence.

Simply and beautifully written, The Giver is a thought-provoking look at utopian society. It was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1994.

A good science fiction book for 30 plus readers.

I didn't really like the book. It was confusing and it wasn't that interesting. The ending didn't really make sense to me. I had to read this book for class and I didn't like it. I got bored half way through but I had to read the rest of the book.

Too sad for you...

This book is very good but starts out difficult to understand. I read this in school and if there are no spoilers before or when your reading it, it is very interesting and a hard-to-put-down novel. I recommend this book to all readers starting at middle school level and maybe before if you are an avid reader like me.

I think the giver is a great book to read. The plot was very interesting. It made me realize no society is a perfect society. Lois Lowry put some excellent foreshadowing in this book, and she also had excellent description. I recommend this book to kids ages nine to thirteen.

it was a good book. it had a lot of things that pop up that you did not see coming. so many things that people would not want.

It was a very interesting book. About a life style without any privacy, or rights. You couldn't chose who you married, or what job you would have. Your kids wouldn't even be blood related. In this almost perfect society there is one that carries all the pain of the truth.

The Giver is a story that explains that no society is perfect. It is a dystopian fiction, and has a bit of romance. Everyone in a society should help each other and develop into a better society, but there's no such thing as a "perfect society" because everyone has their own opinions and it is hard to finalize into an agreement. I would recommend this book to people who questioned my idea of this book and who are wondering what the "perfect society" is in this book. Bye!

I love this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!

I didn't like this book. It looked into human nature and if you stripped that all away. I thought it was creepy and the ending was awful!
