Meet eleven-year-old Hugo Ballard, one of the passengers on one of the famous zeppelins from Germany, the Hindenburg. But riding on the luxurious Hindenburg wasn't a trip for leisure, not at all - they were returning to New York City to save Hugo's little sister, Gertie's life. While on the Hindenburg, Hugo meets and befriends a girl about his age, Martha Singer, or Marty for short, an eight-time zeppelin rider and whose father works for the company which owns the Hindenburg. But soon, a rumour spreads like wildfire that an American spy, who has in his or her possession, papers with the names of secret Nazis who are living in America, is on board the Hindenburg - and that the infamous, cobra-like Colonel Kohl, a very close associate of Hitler, will lock him up and send him back to Germany - or shoot the man on the spot. But Hugo has a bigger problem - his sister, Gertie, is desperately sick and is in danger, and she's begging for him to let her see her dog, Panya. The only problem is that, even though Panya is in the cargo area and very close by, dogs aren't allowed in the passenger area of the Hindenburg. But while retrieving Panya and avoiding an extremely close call with Colonel Kohl, Hugo realizes who the spy is - Mr. Singer, Marty's father. But just as Colonel Kohl discovers that Mr. Singer is the spy, and points his gun at Mr. Singer, an even bigger problem emerges. Just as the Hindenburg is about to land, there was a blast, and suddenly the flammable Hindenburg was on fire. Hugo is separated from his family, and suddenly, it's a race to save his life - and everyone else's lives on the Hindenburg. Will Hugo survive this historic disaster on the Hindenburg? I could never read the "I Survived" books, because I was so horrified after I read one of the books - I was so horrified that so many lives could be lost in a matter of seconds, and I would wonder if I would be one of the masses of people's lives lost in that historic disaster, if I was experiencing it - it was just too horrible to think about! But I did read this book, and it pulled me in - from the very beginning, I wanted to read more, and yet I didn't, because I knew what was going to happen. The book had an aura of suspense hanging over it the whole time, and the book built up to the climax so well, that when it came, I was shocked - I really buried my head in my hands. Some people like action, some people have suspense, and some people like mystery - all of which this book has - but if you're anything like me, you'll feel a wave of sorrow at the climax - at how many lives have been lost in this tragedy, at how many lives had been taken by this disaster.

I thought this was a very exciting and action packed book. It was a good quick read. This is one of my favorite Lauren Tarshis books because it draws you in from the very first paragraph. Hugo's little sister Gertie has Malaria and Hugo's family, the Ballards must fly to America to get a doctor for Gertie. They board the Hindenburg and when they are about to land there is a problem with the Hindenberg. Will the Ballards survive? Will Gertie be cured? Will the Ballards make it back to America? Read I Survived the Hindenburg Disaster to find out more. I would recommend this book to 2nd through 4th graders.

This adventurous book got me hooked!! So I read of the books from the series (here and there) because my younger brother thought we should discuss some main important concepts... And I finally decided that I should just read the whole series in one sitting... So that's what I did... And after I received this book... you know it, I was ready as Lauren Tarshis (sorry for my lack of humorous puns... I'm still working on having funnier puns)... So what I love about this story is that it's straight to the point and relatable, yet very informative. I feel like that history is a huge part of daily life... And I bet your wondering... "history??? What does that have to do---Wait it's probably because I have history class every day at school---" Nope... well sure... but history is important so we don't make the same mistakes as our ancestors did (or if they made mistakes) and to have a better understanding with life, society, government, and how the world became the world it is right now! Ms. Tarshis is an amazing author with bright ideas and twisting it with main ideas we need to learn about as a society. This story focuses on the Hindenburg (a zeppelin) and it's whole story and the disaster of course... The author also spins the Hindenburg history with a little bit with the Nazis side of World War II... and I think it is an amazing idea how those two "history pieces" evolved together... Now along with the summary... Meet Hugo Ballard... ever since his little sister, Gertie, not getting better from her sickness... The Ballard family soon became desperate after multiple doctors, where it was settled that the family must travel to New York to get her cured immediately. So the only fastest and "safest" way to get Gert heal faster is to step on to the zeppelin, the Hindenburg. So just a little background history on the Hindenburg... it's not a blimp (although they are some similarities), they had luxurious food and cozy cabins, more than ten thousand people rode on the zeppelin, and it soon became a huge success... Going back to the summary, Hugo meets a friend along the way named Martha Singer, where her father plays a VERY significant role in this story . Anyways this whole story is Hugo's adventure and exploring the zeppelin himself... but when the disaster struck... uh oh... DUN DUN DUNNNN... So what exactly is Marty's dad doing? Will Gert be okay? Do everybody survive the disaster? To find out what happens next and to answer all these questions... read the book to find out!!!! So my favorite part of the book is when Gert called a Nazi solider a deadly snake... and I also liked how the author added the dog, Panya, to the story... I absolutely love dogs.. so I was reading everything word to word... However there is one disclaimer... Nobody really knows how the disaster even happened and how the zeppelin would explode like that... there are many conspiracy theories that are really fun to read... so I recommend that too... But the author's theory of how the disaster could've happened could also work too... Like I said earlier history does play a huge role... and so now nobody really travels with zeppelins.. So read this amazing and adventurous book!!!!

Yikes... I made this short read to a really long review... sorry XD...

This book is about a boy named Hugo who flies on the Hindenburg on its disastrous final trip. His sister has malaria, and he is going home to New York from Germany, after living in Kenya temporarily. On the zeppelin, there are Nazis, and a spy for the U.S. government.

This book is a really good book. The words are big, and younger kids would be able to read it, but I think this book is filled with fun facts and interesting stories about the Hindenburg, which makes it suitable for people of all ages. In this story, eleven-year old Hugo Ballard and his four-year old sister, Gertie, along with their parents, travel from Germany to New York City on the Hindenburg. Originally, their family is from Kenya, and their plan was to stay a year there. However, when Gertie catches Malaria, the Ballards are forced to leave Kenya and go to New York City to seek treatment for Gertie. Their family boards the zeppelin, hoping to get to New York City in time to treat Gertie. Along the way, Hugo meets a friendly girl named Marty. They become friends, but soon Hugo finds out that Marty's father is a spy, against the Nazis. What will happen to Marty's father? Will Gertie get better? Find out the answers by reading I Survived: The Hindenburg Disaster, 1937, by Lauren Tarshis! I would like to thank DOGObooks for sending me this book in exchange for a review.
