Pi Patel is an unusual boy. The son of a zookeeper, he has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior, a fervent love of stories, and practices not only his native Hinduism, but also Christianity and Islam. When Pi is sixteen, his family emigrates from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship, along with their zoo animals bound for new homes.

The ship sinks. Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to coexist with Richard Parker for 227 days lost at sea. When they finally reach the coast of Mexico, Richard Parker flees to the jungle, never to be seen again. The Japanese authorities who interrogate Pi refuse to believe his story and press him to tell them "the truth." After hours of coercion, Pi tells a second story, a story much less fantastical, much more conventional-but is it more true?

Life of Pi is at once a realistic, rousing adventure and a meta-tale of survival that explores the redemptive power of storytelling and the transformative nature of fiction. It's a story, as one character puts it, to make you believe in God.

Is this book gory? And what age would you recommend this book too? I just wanted to know before I read this book. Thanks.

First of all,I didn't read the book but i watched the movie! It was really good it had some intense scenes but i think if you are a boy this is a great book for you! It looks and sounds boring but it definetly is not! If you like a little bit more action i reccomend the movie.

This was a great story of a survivor. The main character faces countless challenges, but perseveres and overcomes all of the obstacles that present themselves. The relationship between the main character and the tiger is incredible and holds much deeper meaning than one may think.

This is such a great book! I love the movie too!

Why is everyone saying its so amazing?????

I read the first chapter it was kinda boring

It was a challenging read, but I really liked it. In the beginning, the family along with their zoo travels across the ocean. The ship sinks, and all is left is a few animals and a teenage boy. The tiger and the boy are left on a lifeboat.

such a good book

This book was really good I felt so many emotions and thoughts going through my head as I read it

Without a doubt, this was one of the best books I have ever read. It is absolutely incredible! It is very well-written, and I think that the plot really dives deep into the inner workings of humanity and emotion. Every time I was finally able to put the book down, I would sit down and think about it for a very long time. Overall, this book is deeply emotional and thought-provoking. I would recommend it for grades seven and over.
