I finished this book in just about 3 days. It was very good. I recommend it. It's 1937 in Dublin, Ireland, and Kathleen's mother has gone away to help a friend who is about to have a baby. Kathleen has to make porridge, dress her younger sisters, and get to school on time. Unfortunately, she burns the porridge, Patsy gets grease on her blouse, and Madge falls and cuts her knee. All this causes Kathleen to be late for school. The head nun calls Kathleen's mam over and tells her about Irish dancing lessons. Kathleen goes to dancing lessons, but learns that she has to pay a dear price. She is unable to attend dancing lessons until she receives a note from the dancing teacher, Mrs. Maguire, inviting her to take free Irish dancing lessons! Kathleen dances so well that Mrs. Maguire asks her to dance in the feis (pronounced "fesh")--an Irish dancing competition. But she can't afford a fancy Irish dancing costume, and then Mam gets sick. However, unexpected things happen when Polly steps in!
