It's a beautiful story. Rebecca Stead is a great author. She can take a story off the streets and twist it, change it, make it abstract and intriguing. This book tells the story of a young girl whose parents are divorced, because her dad is gay. She doesn't really understand that some people just don't believe in being gay. She loves Jesse, her dad's fiance, and she knows Jesse and her dad love each other. But what she doesn't know is herself. Something that she did in the past has been bothering her, and she doesn't know what kind of person she is and what to do about it. I recommend this books for everyone :) ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Overall, this book was okay, but not the right sort of book for me. This is the second worst book I've ever read! Here are the reasons I didn't like it. 1. This book is peppered with cuss (or curse) words. Halt is the only one who uses them, but he uses them rather often. 2. This book, while engaging, fails to make you want to read the next one, even though the characters SPOILER AHEAD! are preparing for war. 3. I didn't really identify with the characters at all.

Mary Alice, age 15, feels very sorry for herself when she is put on a train by her parents (because they need to get a smaller house where there is no room for her) during the economic slump after "The Great War" (WW1), to live with her grandma (a woman known for being very active and having a gun) in a small town where everyone knows everything. I would recommend this book to age ten and up because it has some parts that are better for older kids (A painter tries to paint the post lady while she has no clothes on, and then a snake falls on her because the painter's studio is in the attic, and the post lady runs back to the post office screaming without her clothes on, and there is also a tiny bit of romance).

This book has a sort of sad ending. I think this is by the same author as Pax, which also does.
