Kidnapped from her home in Senegal and sold as a slave in 1761, a young girl is purchased by the wealthy Wheatley family in Boston. Phillis Wheatley--as she comes to be known--has an eager mind and it leads her on an unusual path for a slave--she becomes America’s first published black poet. “Strong characterization and perceptive realism mark this thoughtful portrayal.”--Booklist

I read this book for my last book report that I did. I think it was a really good book and it was very well written. I liked how the author made it about slaves and how she helped me picture everything that was happening very well while I was reading. I found that there was very good detail and she did a good job incorporating how some of the slaves were treated on the boat. I will definitely be reading more books by Ann Rinaldi in the future.
