Maid Mary Anne (Baby-Sitters Club #66)

Maid Mary Anne (Baby-Sitters Club #66)

By Ann M. Martin

Feeling as if she is too "self-centered" and "self-involved", Mary Anne sets out to be as selfless and helpful as she can be. An opportunity comes when her elderly neighbor, Mrs. Towne, falls and breaks her ankle. In exchange for sewing lessons, Mary Anne helps keep Mrs. Towne's house clean while Mrs. Towne recovers. But after a while, Mary Anne realizes that she doesn't have time or energy to do anything she wants to do, like hang out the BSC girls or Logan. Mary Anne feels as though she is always spending her time at Mrs. Towne's house, cleaning. Could it be that Mary Anne is being taken advantage of? This book reminded me of my grandmother. Her and I love to sew, so this book was close to home for me. I thought this book was so sweet and a little sad. It made me thankful for family and caring people. I also think after reading this book, everyone can appreciate Mary Anne's attitude. She is kind, selfless, patient, and compassionate. I thought this book was wonderful and would suggest if you like babysitting, taking care of others, and friendship. Happy reading!

Stacey's Big Crush (Baby-Sitters Club)

Stacey's Big Crush (Baby-Sitters Club)

By Ann M. Martin

I loved this book! One of my absolute favorites! Stacey loves math and she especially likes her teacher. So, when her teacher says there is going to be a substitute teacher, Stacey is disappointed. That is until she meets the new teacher, Wesley Ellenburg. He's handsome. He's smart. He's kind. He looks like Tom Cruise. He's....22. Stacey is madly in love with Wes, but the other BSC girls think he's too old for her. I thought this book was amazing! This book had so many good lessons. The reader learns various lessons about love, trusting in friends, and thinking before doing. The author did a wonderful job of getting the reader really into the story. At some points the reader just wants to yell at Stacey, telling her that she is making a mistake, and other times the reader wants to comfort Stacey. I thought this book was exceptional and suggest if you like reading about romance, babysitting, and friendship. Happy reading!

New Kid

New Kid

By Jerry Craft

A kid from an inner city school longs to go to art school, but his parents want him to have opportunities and they send him to a prep school that's private where he is a minority among wealthy kids. It's the classic fish out of water, having to find your way in school story. It's well done and he makes friends and eventually he likes his new school. He has to figure out how to fit in to all the different parts of his life. This might be part one and we might get the 2nd year soon. I look forward to it. The art style is full of energy and a dichotomy of the two worlds. Jordan is an artist and his little cartoons are blended in with the story. This won the Newbery and I don't know if the Newbery should give out awards to graphic novels, it does deserve awards. I really enjoyed this and I most definitely recommend this to middle graders.

This Journal Belongs to Ratchet

This Journal Belongs to Ratchet

By Nancy Cavanaugh

The book I will be reviewing is This Journal Belongs to Ratchet by: Nancy J. Cavanaugh. This book is about Rachel, or Ratchet who lives with her dad, in what her dad calls Handyman Specials, which are houses that look like they will fall down. Her story is that she has no friends, and no mom. She feels misplaced and lonely but she sees a chance to change it. This book is a great book. It is super exciting, a little bit sad, with a great ending. This book is an example of realistic fiction because some people are just like Ratchet, except Ratchet isn't a real person, she is from the story. This book is great for someone who likes life changing stories with lots of emotion. This is because Ratchet goes through some great, and some not so great times. One internal conflict is Ratchet deciding to do without having a mom because since she doesn't have a mom, she doesn't know what it would be like to have one. One external conflict is when Ratchet fights with her dad about her mom because she wants to know more about her. This is This Journal Belongs to Ratchet by: Nancy J. Cavanaugh

Stacey's Mistake (Baby-Sitters Club)

Stacey's Mistake (Baby-Sitters Club)

By Ann M. Martin

When the BSC girls come to visit Stacey in NYC, Stacey is psyched! She has their whole weekend planned out: Go to High Rock Cafe, visit a couple of Art Museums, and go spend some time in Central Park. Stacey has even planned a fun party so that the BSC girls can meet Stacey's New York friends. But the BSC girls are very out of place in the city. Mary Anne is a "walking guidebook", Dawn is scared of sewer rats (and numerous other things), and Claudia is envious of all Stacey's New York friends. Stacey is beginning to think that bringing her friends to the city was a BAD idea. I thought this book was relatable, funny, and fun to read. The reader gets to experience seeing the BSC girls out of their element. This book was very enjoyable to read. It mixed drama with comedy to make the reader really get into the story. The reader can also see how comfortable Stacey is in New York City, which is very interesting to read. I suggest if you like babysitting, big city life, and friendship. Happy reading!

Ugly

Ugly

By Robert Hoge

“Ugly” is a true-story about a boy named Robert. Born with a large tumor in the middle of his face, he was different than other kids. With his first operation before the age of 1, he struggled to blend in with the crowd. As a young kid, many of his peers did not notice his differences. As he got older and attending a different school when he transitioned from fourth to fifth grade, people made fun of him and called him names. He went through an operation making medical history, and the hardship of not being able to play the sports he wanted to play. At first, his mom had not wanted to take him home, not because of what she thought of him, but because of what she was afraid others would think. After a month, Robert was taken home. Although he may have not had any legs, he had secret talents such as handwalking, Overall, I think this book was good however Robert’s life story went by fast and I do think the author could have added more details in between. The transitions between ages were well written, however. In conclusion, I recommend this book to grades 3-7. I rate it 4/5 and recommend it to people who are interested in reading books such as “Wonder” and “Out of My Mind”.

The Get Rich Quick Club

The Get Rich Quick Club

By Dan Gutman

This book was okay...so Gina loves money and hope to become a millionaire before she's a teenager even though she's only 10 years old. During the summer she forms a group called the "Get Rich Quick Club" with her neighbors: Eddie, Teddy, Rob, and Quincy hoping to make a lot of money. And one day during one of their club meetings, Rob comes up with an idea to snap a fake picture of a UFO to sell to a newspaper to earn some money.

Claudia's Friend (The Baby-Sitters Club, No. 63)

Claudia's Friend (The Baby-Sitters Club, No. 63)

By Ann Matthews Martin

Claudia is having a lot of trouble in school. More so than usual. So, when her English teacher says Claudia is about to fail the class, Claudia is disappointed but not surprises. Feeling alone and dumb, Claudia starts to get tutored by Stacey (Stacey is one of the BSC girls and Claudia's best friend), but Stacey is not compassionate about Claudia's situation and quite the tyrant! Does anyone understand what Claud is going through? Yes, Shea Rodowsky. Shea is an eight-year-old boy with dyslexia, and he feels the same way Claudia does; alone, dumb, and frustrated. So, when the two of them partner up to study with each other, this could be just the thing that will help Claudia pass her test. By the end of the book, I was almost to tears. Not that this book is sad but instead heart-warming. It teaches the importance of a true friend and how true friends care about you even if it doesn't seem like it. True friends push you to your breaking point but even then, they push you past it in a way you never thought was possible. I thought this book was heart-warming, fun to read, and encouraging. I thought it was encouraging because it taught the reader that you can achieve anything if only you try. I suggest this book if you are looking for self-confidence, if you like babysitting, and if you like reading about friendships. Happy reading!
