Tale of Two Cities (Laurel & Gold)

Tale of Two Cities (Laurel & Gold)

By Charles Dickens

I'm halfway through the novel right now, & I've got to say, it's amazing! So far, I've heard about how the French Revolution is ongoing, while the story revolves around the following characters - Dr. Manette, a man who has been driven insane due to his immoral imprisonment for 18 years; his daughter, Lucie Manette, a lovely young woman who inspires & gives hope to those around her; Charles Darnay, the virtuous son of venal French aristocrats who is persecuted in both England & France; Madame Defarge, a cruel yet cunning agent who silently weaves a complex web of victims; & Sydney Carton, a failing, alcoholic lawyer who is still able to reveal a love filled with both allure & tragedy. Simply fascinating... :D

The Last Dogs: Journey's End

The Last Dogs: Journey's End

By Christopher Holt

A great ending to a great series! I thought with some trepidation that perhaps it would get too dark at the ending, but to my relief the author kept in mind that children do not necessarily need to read about woe and violence to keep them invested in a good story. The ending was exciting and climactic as the dogs have finally found their families and might be separated for good, but it never resorted to human characters pulling out guns or a big animal fight scene to be a big 'shocker' ending. I would suggest this book series to any reader, young or old! I would highly recommend The Last Dogs to anybody of any age who enjoys the harrowing tales of friendships, family, adventure, and suspense. It's fantastic for middle grade and up. 10/10 read overall

Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great (Fudge)

Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great (Fudge)

By Judy Blume

Another great one by Judy Blume. In This book Blume made Shelia finally a star. In the other books like tales of a fourth grade nothing, Shelia tried to shine out but now she got the own book. Shelia is definetly a character but it's really funny. An easy read.

We Are All Made of Molecules

By Susin Nielsen

Author: Suzanne Nielsen Genre: Teen Drama “We Are All Made Of Molecules” is a book about two kids Stewart and Ashley who become stepbrother and sister. These totally different kids have to learn how to live with the new life they have. School problems, mistrusts ,and staying connected to those you love are just some things you will read about The main characters in this book are Stewart and Ashley. The main settings are their house and their school. When Stewart's mom dies of cancer and Ashley's dad finds out he's gay Stewart moves into Ashley's house. Ashley tries to hide the fact that Stewart who is a total “nerd” is sort of her brother. Stewart is gifted and gets bullied so he decides to join a club he was on at his old school the mathletes. At the beginning of the book Ashley doesn't get why Stewart does these weird things to remember his mom like breathing in her molecules ,and displaying her weird crematic figures but as Stewart and Ashley bond she realizes how important it's to remember those you love. Near the end of the book Ashley realizes her friends are going behind her back and spreading rumors so when she sits alone at lunch many kids who support her come sit with her. These kids who she would use to call odd are nice and supportive because they know what it's like when there are rumors about you. In my opinion this was a good book, a real nail bitter, and a realistic novel. Unfortunately there's not a second book. I would rate this book a 8.5 out of 10.

Code Name Verity

Code Name Verity

By Elizabeth E. Wein

I read this book for the first time in 9th grade as an assignment for History of the Espionage and Spying (yes, that was a course I could take in school and I loved it!). I didn't think I would like it that much, considering my usual genres consist of science fiction, fantasy, and poetry; I had also avoided reading it for a summer reading assignment, instead opting for Eighth Grade Bites, a book about an 8th-grade vampire, but that's beside the point. My friend had recommended that I read Code Name Verity for the assignment because she had absolutely loved it when she read it, so I did. It took me a little bit of time to actually sit down and read the book but once I started reading, I couldn't stop. It remains to be my favorite book of all time and also remains to be the only book that has made me cry for three days straight. If you don't already know from the summary of the book, Code Name Verity is the story of two female spies, Maddie and Queenie, and the bond they shared together. The story is written from the point of view of Verity, who was captured during a mission behind enemy lines and is being forced to write down everything she knows about the British intelligence. As a reader, you are reading the letters of information (complete with crossing out and notes in the margins) as Verity writes them to the person who captured her. Through these, you dive into the story of Maddie and Queenie's friendship and backstories. Overall, the writing is impeccable! It really resembles the time period that the book takes place and evokes feelings in the reader as they read Verity's writings. The friendship of Maddie and Queenie immediately connected with a friendship that I have, which is likely why the book was so emotionally touching for me. It is definitely a must-read for anyone and everyone.
