Wheel on the School, The
By Meindert DeJong
The Wheel On The School is a John Newbery Medal award book written by Meindert DeJong. It’s about six schoolchildren who want to make change by welcoming storks back to Shora. I enjoy the simplicity of this book because it focuses on schoolchildren. The author conveys the thoughts and personalities in a way that makes me understand easier. When I read this book, it kind of made me think about how I thought and the way I thought when I was younger. I really like how the author starts the story. It all started when Lina was reading an “essay” about storks, and then all along the wheel idea came out. The schoolchildren searched the whole village just for a wheel to welcome storks into Shora. Then they couldn’t find a wheel, which was a problem, and they met numerous difficulties along the way, but they kept on persisting, which I enjoyed and liked about this book.
