Mila 2.0

Mila 2.0

By Debra Driza

Mila is not a normal teenage girl, but she thinks she is. She is really an android, made by the military, with artificial intelligence. Her mom stole her from the military compound so she could have a normal life and implanted false memories into her. But when Mila finds out she’s an android, her whole world turns upside down. Their enemies invade their home, and they are forced to run away-far away, to Germany-but they get caught at the airport. In a thrilling sci-fi adventure of survival, Mila is on the run from the military with no one but her mom, leaving her friends in Clearwater along with her boyfriend Hunter, whom she longs to see. This suspenseful debut will keep readers on the edge of their seat, even after the last page. What I thought about it: Ok, let me say this: DEBRA DRIZA, YOU ARE AMAZING! Mila 2.0 is definitely one of my absolute fave books. The cover and the blurb alone had me sold, but the book just had so much suspense and action, that it is a must read. the storyline is wonderful, with so many unexpected plot twists and turns. I love all the android stuff; it’s just so cool to think of someone being replicated perfectly by the military, created stronger than a normal person with accuracy, awesome reflexes, built-in GPS; I mean, how cool is that? This book will leave fans of science fiction and thrillers begging for more. Debra Driza gives this series a kickstart and puts everything she has into her debut.

Uprising

Uprising

By Margaret Peterson Haddix

From the eyes of three young girls in the disastrous Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, two died tragically, but one survived. As Ms. Livingston told Harriet the story of long ago, the times of dreams or success, wealth, and happiness in America. Long ago, a girl named Bella had immigrated from Calia, Italy, She came with the dream of providing enough food for her family, struggling to live in the rural village back in Italy. As Bella arrives at Ellis Island in New York, the family that was supposed to care for her were sent back to Italy. Luckily, her cousin Pietro was already in America and took care of her. She immediately fell in love with him (which is quite strange because normally you wouldn't fall in love with a family member) They live in one of the tight tenement buildings in New York which are owned by the Luciano family. The Lucianos do not treat Bella and Pietro well, but Signora Luciano's son Rocco is very kind to Bella. (He falls in love with her later on). As Bella got a job at the Triangle, she met a girl named Yetta who was on strike because of unfair wages. They had made the uprising. However, Bella continued to work during the strike until she got horrible news. Her family had died in Calia from the lack of food. She felt heartbroken and so lonely because Pietro was gone, she had no family, and she recently found out that the Luciano's had been stealing her money with greed. She was so mad that she ran away and decided to live in a different tenement with Yetta and her older sister Rahel. Meanwhile, in the rich society of New York, Jane Wellington is having dreams of going to college, women's suffrage, and love from her father. Unfortunately, her father does not have the time to care for her, and her mother had died when she was born. She soon runs away with dreams to help the poor girls who work under horrible conditions and raise awareness for them. She comes to live with Yetta and Bella in the tenement, and they all worked together to survive. Later on, the three girls were at the factory, but someone had dropped a cigarette and the building soon went into flames. Bella had managed to escape safely, but Yetta had died to jump off the window, and Jane had burned herself to death in the building. All of the victims now were honored for their hard work and are forever remembered. I give this a 5 out of 5 and recommend this beautiful historical fiction based story by Haddix which truly happened at the Asch Building in New York City.

This book is amazing! I read it, and it hit me really hard! A little while after I read it I could not read anything else for a while because I was still recovering from the emotional impact it had on me. This book is by far one of my favorite books I have ever read, and I would recommend it to anyone who asks me for a good book!

A Time to Die (Out of Time Book 1)

A Time to Die (Out of Time Book 1)

By Nadine Brandes

A Time to Die is one of my new favorite books. Nadine Brandes's narrative is a wonderful balance of description, action and dialogue that really brings Parvin's world to life. And the concept behind the book is really unique and Brandes pulls it off beautifully. The whole idea is that every person is given a clock at birth, that counts down to the person's death. But Parvin Blackwater has been sharing a clock with her twin brother, both managing to evade the authorities questions. But the clock runs out in less than a year - and the twins don't know who it belongs to. Parvin believes it is her clock, and decides she wants to do something with the rest of her life - a quest that ends with her being thrown through the Wall ( a death sentence). She surprisingly survives, finds a whole other civilization and now must struggle to survive and fit in in this new world. There were twists and turns and amidst it all is Parvin's struggle to figure out what her faith to God truly means, and figure out the secrets her brother has kept from her. I recommend this book to dystopian and fantasy fans, as well as people who enjoy reading Christian fiction. I recommend this to middle school ages and above. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
