”American born Chinese” By Gene Luen Yang is a graphic novel story which takes place in a mythical world/ Heaven and America. The characters Are Jin Wang, Monkey king, and Danny. This novel started When the monkey king went to a big party in Heaven and he was denied access because he was a monkey and did not wear shoes. The Monkey king took matters into his own hand and beat them all up. This made the monkey king change who he really was and he tried to bet the best and tried to fit in with all the other gods, this correlates with every other character in this novel. Jin was the only Chinese American boy in his class so he always felt like the odd one out so he wished he was and American boy so he wouldn’t feel so alone so later on in life it forced him the change how he looked.Danny is an all American boy and he has a cousin from China which all ways embarrasses him and ruins his reputation so he transfers schools every year so he doesn’t have to bare the embarrassment. Some topics in this story are self appreciation, friendship and loving yourself. I recommend this book to you because this is a short cool graphic novel and you can learn valuable lessons when you read this book I would rate this a 5/5 book got read it

Everything Sad Is Untrue: (A True Story)
By Daniel Nayeri
Everything Sad is Untrue (a true story) Book Review: The book “Everything Sad is Untrue (a true story)” by Daniel Nayeli is a realistic fiction book following the story of Khosrou (Daniel) and his experiences in his life as a refugee from Iran. The story follows Daniel and his family as they seek refuge in Oklahoma amidst war in Iran and it divulges into aspects of life such as religion, family issues, not fitting in with society, and foreign culture. “Every story is the sound of a storyteller begging to stay alive.” is a popular quote from the book said by the main character Khosrou which shows how serious life is for a child who is a refugee. In my opinion, this book is very inspiring and heartfelt as it follows a good role model for young children who might be facing the same hardships as Khosrou and it definitely deserves a read.

The book “The Only Game”, written by Mike Lupica, is a realistic fiction sports novel. In this story Jack Callahan, a 13 year old boy,who lives in a baseball town called Walton, is grieving over his older brother Brad's death and learning how to handle the stress in his life, especially baseball. He wants to make his brother proud, but cannot help but blame himself for his brother's death. Why is he blaming himself? He decides he needs a break from baseball to focus on dealing with his brother's death. Once news gets around that the best player on the boys baseball team is quitting, Jack's friends get angry that Jack left without an explanation. Jack also has to decide how to tell his parents that he has decided to quit baseball. While Jack is taking a break from baseball he makes some new friends that support him and remind him how beneficial baseball is in his life. After his new friends help him work through his grief and get him back out on the field Jack decides to help them show off their own talent on the field. He teaches them the rules of baseball and reminds them how important it is to believe in yourself. But who is teaching who? The topics addressed in this book are grief, love, loss, guilt, trust and friendships. This teaches how important good mental health is when playing a sport. Overall I love the lesson that the book taught and I would definitely recommend this book. I give this book a 4.5 star rating.
