The First Rule of Punk

The First Rule of Punk

By Celia C. Pérez

María Luisa “Malú” isn’t a typical seventh grader. She doesn’t speak Spanish fluently like everyone else at her new school in Chicago, and she hates eating meat and cilantro. Her dad, who lives a thousand miles away, always tells Malú about the first rule of punk; be yourself. And following that advice is how she managed to annoy the most popular girl at her school, violate the dress code, and make three new friends—Joe, Benny, and Ellie. When the four of them decide to make a band and participate in the school’s talent show, they’re in for a big surprise. The principal doesn’t want their punk rock music in the show...but Malú and her friends aren’t giving up. Instead, they decide to hold an alternate talent show—one where all people are welcome, where they can play their music freely. As Malú learns to navigate the hard paths of a middle school she doesn’t belong in, she learns that it’s better to stand out than fit in. Can she, Ellie, Joe, and Benny save the world of punk rock? Read this book to find out! Witty, humorous, and heartwarming, The First Rule of Punk perfectly depicts the life of a middle-schooler. You will love this book!

Worlds Apart (Story Thieves)

Worlds Apart (Story Thieves)

By James Riley

This is the last book in the Story Thieves series, and I loved it! I didn't want the series to end, but it sadly did. This book is about bringing the fictional and non-fiction Bethanys back together and forming the old Bethany. Own needs to stop Nobody with Bethany, but he needs Bethany's help. Can they stop Nobody in time before both worlds collapse? I loved this finale, and I beg for more, even though there not going to be a new one.

Secret Origins (Story Thieves)

Secret Origins (Story Thieves)

By James Riley

It is incredible. The book has major plot twists and is a great continuation to the first 2, but the book lacks closure and doesn't tie up loose ends. It makes sense since it is in the series, but I wish it would give some sort of ending for at least one of the characters. I will still give it 2 stars since the Jupiter City comic book makes up for the lack of closure and the dad is super cool!

Kiss

Kiss

By Jacqueline Wilson

This book is definitely not like any other books I've ever read. It's a bit weird for my taste but otherwise it is a good book. Sylvie is a relatable character though, when it comes to her thoughts and appearance any girl can relate to her. Carl on the other hand is witty and calm; he kind of reminds me of myself in some ways. I found the glass obsession surprising since that clearly isn't something you would normally see or read. Thought in the end I enjoyed reading something that was out of my comfort-zone. One thing I liked was that Sylvie was still not fully developed into her teenage figure or mind. I think it helped the story and also made it relatable to readers which is always important. Overall the book was okay in my opinion but, I wouldn't recommend this book.
