Join the world of "Artemis Fowl", the number one bestseller by Eoin Colfer. Rumour has it Artemis Fowl is responsible for every major crime of the new century. Just twelve years old and already he's a criminal genius, plotting to restore his family's fortune with a spot of corruption and kidnapping. Kidnapping a fairy for ransom, to be precise. Artemis Fowl has discovered a world below ground of armed and dangerous - and extremely high-tech - fairies. But he may have underestimated their powers. They will fight back. Is the boy about to trigger a cross-species war? Let the misadventure begin. "Fast-paced, tongue in cheek ...laugh-out-loud". ("Sunday Times"). "A huge hit". ("The Guardian"). "Artemis is a brilliant creation". (Anthony Horowitz). Winner of the WHSmith Children's Book of the Year Award and Children's Book of the Year at the Children's Book Awards. It is shortlisted for the Whitbread Children's Book of the Year Award. Eoin Colfer was born and raised in Wexford in the south-east of Ireland. He began writing plays at an early age and, as an adult, continued to write. "Artemis Fowl", his first book featuring the brilliant young anti-hero, was an immediate international bestseller and won several prestigious awards.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Eoin Colfer, like me, is an Irishman. He has a fresh mind that makes fairytale more than damsels being rescued by handsome princes. Artemis Fowl is a twelve-year-old Irish boy, yet the greatest, most brilliant criminal mastermind in the world. With the help of his bodygaurd/manservent, Butler, and Butler's younger teenage sister, Juliet, Artemis captures an elf of the Lower Elements, Holly Short of the LEPrecon unit. Artemis throws her in a cell of solid rock where she is held ransom for "fairy" gold. But does Artemis really know what he's dealing with? Artemis thinks that he's one step ahead in the game, but then these fairies stop playing by their own rules.

I read these books when I was about 8. WAY TOO YOUNG!! But, I need to re-read them. I think I'll like them more now that I'm older.

I LOVED this book. It's one of the best I've ever read, next to The Hunger Games and The 39 Clues. Artemis Fowl is a twelve-year-old Irish genius, family millionare, and get this- criminal mastermind. He and his bodygaurd, Butler, capture a fairy- but not the Barbie Fairytopia junk or anything. These fairies are heavily armed, highly trained, and up for anything. He holds a leprechaun- Caiptain Holly Short of the LEPrechan unit- hostage for gold. Artemis thinks he's a whole new book ahead of them......but then they stop playing by their own rules.
