After Tyler's father is injured in a tractor accident, his family is forced to hire migrant Mexican workers to help save their Vermont farm from foreclosure. Tyler isn’t sure what to make of these workers. Are they undocumented? And what about the three daughters, particularly Mari, the oldest, who is proud of her Mexican heritage but also increasingly connected her American life. Her family lives in constant fear of being discovered by the authorities and sent back to the poverty they left behind in Mexico. Can Tyler and Mari find a way to be friends despite their differences?

In a novel full of hope, but no easy answers, Julia Alvarez weaves a beautiful and timely story that will stay with readers long after they finish it.

This book is mostly about 3 sisters and their dad the story takes place in Vermont and the mother is in North Carolina because she got deported and the dad is working at a farm. My favorite character in this book is Mari Cruz because she represents that woman can be powerful no matter what. Something I enjoyed about this book was that I can actually connect to this book because my dad and mom work to keep me and my 2 sisters alive. If you like books about immigration you will like this book because the dad and mom and Mari are immigrants. I recommend this book because it is like something I can connect to.

This is a story about a girl named Mari that goes through tough times with her family. She is from Mexico and has been brought by her parents to America. She gets bullied in school for being a immgrant from Mexico. Her family is really poor and they stay with these people that take of Mari's family and helps them out. They milk cows and when there's like thanksgiving or Chrismas they come together like a big family. Mari's family is running away from being deported back to Mexico and there's a group that's called la migra is chaseing them too. These characters in this book are different in many ways for example luby and ofie (Mari's sisters) were born in America and Mari was born in Mexico. Tyler is Mari's friend in the book also is apart of the family that is taken care of Mari's family and Tyler before at the start of the book wanted to serve his country and get Mari's family deported but later in the book he wants to help them not get deported. My honset oppion about this book is that I think that its a great book and it helps me to be inform about what Mexican's maybe have to deal with in this country.

The book is well written it tells why stuff is happening why the children are not getting along and some characters like Tyler Mari are cool because they have the same problem but don’t know it and like the parents play a big role and the sisters and it has a background but it is different I’m loved the book it long but it explains how this. Happened to this i say you should get returned to sender .
