Raja has been raised in captivity. Not behind the bars of a zoo, but within the confines of an American home. He was stolen when he was young to be someone's pet. Now he's grown up . . . and is about to be sent away again, to a place from which there will be no return.

John grew up with Raja. The orangutan was his friend, his brother -- never his pet. But when John's parents split up and he moved across the country, he left Raja behind. Now Raja is suffering.

There's one last chance to save Raja -- a chance that will force John to confront his fractured family and the captivity he's imposed on himself all of these years.

Eliot Schrefer's last two novels, Endangered and Threatened, were both finalists for the National Book Award. With Rescued, he brings his remarkable storytelling to the American landscape, giving us a boy who must redefine his own humanity and an orangutan who will need his help in order to return home.

This book was great! It basically was about this boy John who had a best friend and brother who was an orangutan named Raja.I was so sad when Raja bit off one of John fingers and the parents got divorced and then was sent to the Friendly Land zoo.I totally recommend!

John's life instantly changes when his dad brings home Raja. Raja is like a brother to John the only thing is Raja is an orangutan. John's parents continually fight over his father's decision in bringing the animal to their house but it's not until Raja accidentally bites off John's finger in stress about not seeing him after they both come down with pneumonia that they finally divorce and John is not allowed to see Raja. Years go by and John's dad is going bankrupt and is forced to move out of his home and get rid of Raja. John can't bear Raja being taken away and goes to say goodbye to his old friend. But once there John realizes that Raja has changed he doesn't trust him at first. His father explained that Raja would be going to a zoo called Friendly Land. But it's not till after Raja is in the truck that he looks up the zoo and realizes that it is a bad place for Raja to go. John then goes on a mission to save Raja and return him home. This book explains clearly the bond between a pet and owner but how bad it is to own an ape. This was a pretty good book.

This book is actually really good! Its about a monkey named raja, and he has to go to somebody's house and to never come back to his family. Since Raja's parents split, their family is broken. I like how raja's sibling john, is determined to bring raja and get the family back together

It was a slower read at the beginning. I thought I would be totally into it since it is about animals, but I wasn't that into it. I read my parents the first part before the "part one". I thought it was crazy what the Orangutan did to John, one of the main characters. Out of the books I have read for the summer reading program this one is my least favorite.

I think this book is amazing for animal lovers. It talks about how humans can save animals lifes but it's also the other way around.

The book was pretty good. I kind of liked it Raja who has been raised in captivity within the confines of an American home and was stolen when he was young to be someone’s pet. Now he’s grown up and is about to be sent away again, to a place from which there will be no return. John grew up with Raja and the orangutan, as they say, was his best friend like his brother but when John’s parents split up and he moved across the country, he left Raja behind and now Raja is in danger. The author leaves some interesting cliff hangers. I love this book and I would recommend it.

John grows up with everything he could possibly want. His father is a businessman who travels far and wide. One day, he comes home with a rare gift for his son, a baby orangutan, and the two become inseparable friends. But as the orangutan gets older, stronger, less cute, the family relegates the animal to a locked trailer in the backyard. Until John's father finally decides to sell the ape to a roadside zoo. Coming to the defense of his childhood friend, John resolves to smuggle the orangutan back to Indonesia, and the two set out on a journey far more dangerous than John bargained for.

I wonder what this book is about. I wonder if it is good. I wonder?? Maybe if I read it I might find out. Lets see...
