“Few books are beautifully written, fewer still are important; this novel is both.” --The Washington Post

Lina is just like any other fifteen-year-old Lithuanian girl in 1941. She paints, she draws, she gets crushes on boys. Until one night when Soviet officers barge into her home, tearing her family from the comfortable life they've known. Separated from her father, forced onto a crowded and dirty train car, Lina, her mother, and her young brother slowly make their way north, crossing the Arctic Circle, to a work camp in the coldest reaches of Siberia. Here they are forced, under Stalin's orders, to dig for beets and fight for their lives under the cruelest of conditions.

Lina finds solace in her art, meticulously-and at great risk-documenting events by drawing, hoping these messages will make their way to her father's prison camp to let him know they are still alive. It is a long and harrowing journey, spanning years and covering 6,500 miles, but it is through incredible strength, love, and hope that Lina ultimately survives. Between Shades of Gray is a novel that will steal your breath and capture your heart.

I loved this book. Finished it in three school nights. Although I cried the entire book I would read it again in a heart beat. GO READ! :)

Between Shades of Gray is a wonderful book. Ruta Sepetys did an awesome job. It was the perspective of a teenage girls view of communism. Great job. (:

Well to tell you all the truth this is what had happened when the Soviets took the country Lithuania this is what happened this was reality back then

Im currently reading this book and so far, it's amazing. I like how it shows the perspective of a girl my age during the Holocaust. The main character and I also have the same name. :)

I am glad that you think that. I have just finished this book and it was truly an amazing and beautiful story. it made see that you have to appreciate everything before it is gone.

This book was a spectacular one! The story itself was very sad, realistic to say the least, no sugar-coat. It exposes the history beside what happened with the nazis while at the same time making the story very entertaining. I saw the Scholastic videos, and the author took extra measures to feel what Lina was feeling, and that made the story so much better

this book was okay,... pretty depressing in my opinion. The book's setting was when world war two was occurring. it was so sad of how a 15 year old girl , brother, and mother, without their father has to go to a prison camp, with nothing. SO SAD. If you want to read a book about warld war 2 and how depressing it is, this book is for you, but for the people who want a happy book, dont read then!

This book is about a 15-year-old girl who fights for her life with her mother, brother, and annoying neighbor. They are taken to a prison camp, in a dingy boxcar, and are given barely any water or food. They go through times of trouble, and hardship, which only grows them closer. WARNING: It is not for the faint-hearted. Overall, it was a great book, and I know I will read it again.

My friend and me recently read this book together and we both really enjoyed it. I love historical fiction and this story was really interesting!
