About ‘Les Misérables' by Victor Hugo

Les Misérables is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862, that is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. In the English-speaking world, the novel is usually referred to by its original French title, however several alternatives have been used, including The Miserable, The Wretched, The Miserable Ones, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor, The Victims and The Dispossessed.Beginning in 1815 and culminating in the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris, the novel follows the lives and interactions of several characters, particularly the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his experience of redemption.

Ok, I admit it : I really wanted to dump the book into the trash can halfway through it, thinking I was wasting my time, but if you were like me, let me tell you this : DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND FINISH THE BOOK BECAUSE IT IS WORTH IT. (HONEST, REALLY.) This book starts out with the story of the Bishop of Digne, who unlike other bishops, gave up all his luxury to the poor. It then tells how Jean Valjean was not allowed into any inn because of his records : 19 years in jail, and the Bishop takes him. Here on Jean Valjean decided to start over anew and "be nice", and our story begins. I love this book because unlike most of the books I read, this is actually REALISTIC. Realistic as in, it's not the typical oh - so - cliché young adult realistic fiction where a girl meets a boy and.. you get my point. Yes, there is romance included, but it's not the cheesy kind. This book has a setting where poverty is so severe you have to fight and steal for food, and although the society we live in today isn't exactly that.. cruel, we can relate and understand the character's thoughts and actions. I totally recommend this book to anyone who likes to read realistic fiction but HAS PATIENCE. :D
