Silly Putty (Junk or Treasure)Friday, May 4, 2012 at 5:05 am

Mrs. SettelmaierWhat scientific connection does this story have to our current lesson about properties of matter?Write a persuasive letter telling whether or not we should be able to make silly putty at school?Use details from the text to support your answer.

Silly Putty Takes On A More Serious Role

Who hasn't had fun with Silly Putty? The gooey mixture of cornstarch and water that flows like a liquid when handled gently, but turns as hard as a rock, when punched or stomped over. After years of entertaining kids in elementary classrooms, the simple mixture that can magically change its form, is now poised to take on a more serious role - Fix potholes!

silly puty is good for the road and is cool and fun for US and kids that are bad can not do it.

Daer Mrs. Settlemaier, I think we should make silly putty because it is fun and the Silly Putty will not damage the environment nor, harm the human handling it. Also we will still do science.
      • christinealmost 12 years
Dear Mrs.Settelmaier, we can make silly putty and learn about science first and then make the silly putty

Dear Mrs.Settelmaier, I think we should make silly putty. I say this because it would be fun. Also people that are silly can have it taken away. Only good people should be able to do it. It will help us learn about how to make silly putty. It is good for the environment. We could help stop the potholes! Silly putty is non toxic. We could test the magnet thing out too. It won’t hurt the environment. IT IS GOOD! Love, Jordyn J.

The product is completely biodegradable and no-toxic.

Dear Mrs. Settlemier I think the class should make silly putty because it will be fun and if we do be bad you can take away time and we can learn about micsture, the envirerment. And i,ll pay atention.we can also laern how its a chemical.

For the enviorment.According to scientists when the particles in the cornstarch get pushed around rapidly, which happens when they are punched or run over, they have no time to rearrange .

Should Restaurants Penalize Customers For Leftover Food?

According to the World Health Organization, over a billion people in the world are starving and the number that is underfed, is even greater. Despite these dire statistics, many of us have no qualms ordering much more than we can devour at restuarants and then, letting it all go to waste - Now, a restaurant in Saudi Arabia is trying to put a stop to the unneccasary wastage - by levying a fine on its customers!

                                                                        ScienceSunday, December 4, 2011 at 5:33 pm

White lions are extremely rare to begin with, so when seven are born on the same day, it is definitely something to celebrate. The seven cuties were born to two different moms, on July 30th at the Zoo in the town of Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock in Germany. Unfortunately one died soon after, but the others seem to be thriving.

How The Seahorse Got Its 'Curves'

Scientists have often wondered why the seahorse, with its curvy neck and snout resembles a horse, to which it has no relationship, rather than its closest cousin, the straight bodied and rather ordinary looking - Pipefish. Now, a researcher believes he may have the answer and as is the case in any kind of evolution - It's to do with survival.

Scientists Announce 2011's Top Ten New Species

Having inhabited the earth for millions of years, one would think that we have found almost every living creature there is. That apparently, is not the case - Not only do we find thousands of new species every year, scientists estimate that there are over 10 million, still waiting to be discovered.

Tiny Shore Bird's Record-Breaking Migration Trek

The Great Snipe is a nondescript chubby little shore bird with a long beak - Not one that would be considered a great athlete, by any stretch of the imagination. However, a recent study has revealed that these seemingly non-aerodynamic birds, not only fly non-stop for long periods of time during their annual migration, but do so, at record speeds.

Who Knew Crows Were This Smart?

The reason humans are considered to be at the top of the food chain is to do with inteligence, which is measured by their ability to build and use complex tools to solve day-to-day issues. However, recent research has revealed that a number of animals also display similarly intelligent behavior.

Queen Bees Are Born To Rule!

The hierarchical structure that exists within bee colonies has always been a source of fascination for researchers. The biggest mystery? With tens of thousands of identical members in each colony, how do just a handful get selected to be Queen bee(s), while the rest get relegated to being workers?

Octopus Use Coconut Shells As Mobile Home And Armor

Most of us think of the Octopus as an eight-legged mollusk that spends its days wriggling around with its snake-like arms. However, not only does this intelligent animal have a razor-sharp memory, it has also, been known to maneuver through mazes and even try escape from tanks.

Why Ants Never Lose Their Way

Ants are industrious little insects that always seem to know where they are heading - Now, a team of curious researchers from the Technical University of Munich and Brazilian Center for Physics Research believe they may have the answer - It's all to do with their in-built GPS systems.

Green GymThursday, October 27, 2011 at 6:10 pm

While it may not appear to be so - Thanks to all the equipment and television screens, not to mention the bright lights, constant air-conditioning or heating, gyms are big energy users - kind of ironic when you consider how much energy people expand whilst working out. Though there has been some sporadic attempts to harness the energy, nobody has taken it to the level of Portland-based Green Microgym.

Migrating BirdThursday, October 27, 2011 at 5:57 pm
