Of Mice and Men

Of Mice and Men

By John Steinbeck

Of Mice and Men: Summary Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work on a ranch during the Great Depression in the early 30’s? Then, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck would be a good book for you. This book takes place in the Salinas Valley in California. The protagonists (or two main characters), are Lennie and George. They are two guys who wander around work on a ranch, then another, and another. This is what was called jumpers. Their dream is to own a farm for themselves. Sometimes the world isn't so nice though. One conflict is that Lennie is a special man, that has trouble remembering stuff, this is a problem that they face throughout the whole book. Another conflict is that Lennie is very strong, and not good with small animals. The turning point is when they find a farm that pays good money. They think by working there for a month, they can save up enough to get their land. Although things get heated between Lennie and the antagonist; Curley. This book is very fast paced and has a few swears, but overall, the message is that even the best intentions don’t always end well. Of Mice and Men is my favorite book and hope it will be yours too.

Ready Player One: A Novel

Ready Player One: A Novel

By Ernest Cline

With a global energy crisis, over population, and many more problems, many people on Earth turn to the OASIS, a multiplayer simulation game, where everyone can live the life they want, just like Wade Watts did. The OASIS was created by the brilliant mind of James Halliday, and after he died, the whole world found out that he left his whole fortune for the most worthy OASIS user, who had to do to Easter Egg Halliday had hidden in the OASIS by finding the three keys, and passing the three gates, as well as the final task. Soon nearly everyone was on the OASIS to find the egg. The IOI also hired a task force just for the egg. Wade, on the other hand, considered himself to be a gunter, since he knew everything about Halliday and was always thinking about the clue for the location of the first key. Will Wade be worthy enough to find the Easter Egg, or will IOI beat him to it? Blinded by fame and love, will Wade really risk his relationships with all his friends, and isolate himself? Or will he get his head back into the game and not let his popularity change his personality? To find out, you should read Ready Player One. It is now one of my favorite books, and I really enjoyed reading it. Throughout the whole book, I found it fascinating how detailed it was, and my favorite part was how Wade changed from being blinded by popularity to becoming more humble thoughtful. There were always new twists in the book, and I recommend this book to anyone who loves science fiction. I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars.

Notorious RBG Young Readers' Edition: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Notorious RBG Young Readers' Edition: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg

By Irin Carmon, Shana Knizhnik

Excellent! This book is a biography about how great Ruth Bader Ginsburg is, and how she has become the person she is. This book is very fun, and includes things that most people don't even know about her and her life. Like, did you know her husband is a famous chef? Or that her mom died on her graduation day? You understand the importance of women in the supreme court. I definitely recommend it for kids 9-12.

Little Women

Little Women

By Louisa May Alcott

This is a wonderful book. It is about four sisters: the March sisters. Meg; the eldest and the prettiest, Jo; the tomboyish, author, Beth; the sweet, shy one, and Amy; the youngest and most self conscious artist. They and their wise mother have to face the brave of the war going on, with the hanging feeling that their soldier father might not come home. While so, they meet a young man named Laurie, who soon is like a part of the family. Later in the book, Laurie falls in love with Jo. Jo, however, does not feel the same way. When Laurie confesses, Jo breaks his heart. I for one, disagree with this. I feel Laurie and Jo would have made a lovely couple. Later on, Beth gets brushed with death once, but manages to survive. I was really sad when Beth died from scarlet fever, and I wish she didn't. When the girls grow up, each one goes to pursue their dreams except for Meg, who marries John Brooke, Laurie's old tutor. They have twins, and have a happy family. As for Amy, she heads off to Europe with grumpy old Aunt March to paint. While in Europe, she stumbles upon Laurie, who also tried to escape from home for a while to try to mend his heartbreak. Honestly, I think Laurie was being a little creepy. But of course, Amy and Laurie fall in love and get married. And for the last but best character, Jo, she escaped to New York City to study, and writes a book. While there, she falls in love with a college professor, and they later get married. It was a very good story. I recommend it to anyone looking for a relatable historical fiction with excellent vocabulary.

Fallout

Fallout

By Todd Strasser

The Boy at the top of the Mountain by John Boyne is a historical fiction book. Pierrot is a young boy who grew up in Paris and is sent to Bavaria which is a free state of Germany. Topics addressed in this book are Holocaust, family, racism, orphanage. The theme of this book is that one bad choice can affect your life greatly. A quote that stands out to me is one of the nazis saying “there is nothing to fear” showing that they had complete trust that Hitler and the higher up Nazis were in the right. I liked this book because it was super interesting to see how the author would portray a young boy and his life living at Hitler’s house. I would definitely recommend this book and would give it 4 out of 5 stars.

We Are Water Protectors

We Are Water Protectors

By Carole Lindstrom

Visually stunning. The illustrations are so beautiful and eye catching it can be easy to get off track of such an important message. Based on a tribe's opposition to a pipeline being constructed near their water source, it is a reminder that indigenous violations and environmental concerns are still being violated today. There is a compelling message here among the inspirational writing style. A complement to any library's diversified collection to include native voices.
