Blood Lad, Vol. 1

Blood Lad, Vol. 1

By Yuuki Kodama

I got Blood Lad as a birthday gift and thought it was really good, a bit expensive to buy on my own though. I'd prefer it if they released it in individual $9.99 volumes instead of the $20 big books.

Flowers of Evil, Volume 2

Flowers of Evil, Volume 2

By Shuzo Oshimi

We finally get to see more of the controlling sarcastic yet breath-taking character Nakamura in this volume. Highly recommended.

Flowers of Evil, Volume 1

Flowers of Evil, Volume 1

By Shuzo Oshimi

Very twisted, with a dark sense of humor. Every character seems to have a dark side, which we'll see more of in later volumes. As someone who's caught up to the Japanese release, I highly recommend you read this series. The first few chapters might be slow, but once you really get into it you can't pull yourself away.

Flowers of Evil, Volume 6

Flowers of Evil, Volume 6

By Shuzo Oshimi

The second arc of Flowers of Evil ends with a bang in this amazing volume. I just couldn't pull myself away from this arc. "It's 11 pm on a school night." I told myself. "I have to stop." But there was no way I could. Recommended for all.

Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys, Vol. 1: Friends

Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys, Vol. 1: Friends

By Naoki Urasawa

Great book by the famous Naoki Urasawa, also Viz Media's edition of the book is AMAZING; $12.99 retail (though you'll find it cheaper online for $8-$10) gets you amazing page quality (basically unable to tear unless you purposely do so), 200+ pages of manga with no ads, and the only release Viz has done so far with a book jacket. I wouldn't mind paying $12.99 for manga if they were all like this!

Angelic Layer, Vol. 1 (v. 1)

By Clamp

It was good but a little too sugar sweet for my tastes. It's definitely no Chobits.

Sankarea: Undying Love, No. 1

Sankarea: Undying Love, No. 1

By Mitsuru Hattori

This was the first anime I watched that was about zombies. And it's really good. *UPDATE* Chihiro Furuya favorite pastime is indulging himself in zombie comics, movies, and daydreams. As a matter of fact, he only wants to date zombie girls! One day, Chihiro and his cousin Ranko go to their relatives' shrine to help them and stay with them for a while. As Chihiro was cleaning out a ginormous stack of books, he finds an old book that contains resurrection potions. He decides it would help him out later, and so he keeps it in his room. A short while later, he goes to a school for boys and makes new friends. It seems that everybody admires Sanka Rea (last name first in some countries) because she is a beautiful rich girl and a perfect role model at the all girls school next door. Because of Chihiro's interest in zombies, he has no mind to pay attention to what his friends have to say about her. ✰Changing to Rea's perspective✰ At school, Rea seems to have the perfect life; but alas, it is not so. Her mother envies her because she has all her father's love and she doesn't get any of it, and so she acts distastefully toward her. As for Rea's father, he wants her to be a pure image in his mind, and so he won't let her hang out with boys, form intimate friendships, and basically keep her from living a normal life. The most dreadful thing that he does (in Rea's opinion) is taking nude pictures of her when her birthday comes round so he could record her growth. Now, back to Chihiro. Unfortunately, his pet cat Babu dies a few weeks into his staying at the shrine/temple. This was a very grave moment for Furuya-kun because he loved his cat from the deepest part of his heart. Then, he gets the idea to resurrect Babu using the book he found before. Chihiro dives into deep investigation to find the ingredients required to make the potion. He works in an abandoned apartment by a well and experiments and his cat's body. Meanwhile, he finds out more about Rea when he unexpectedly encounters her taking an open air bath in the hot springs. He sees that she is distressed because she always comes down by the same well by the ruins to scream about her troubles. One late afternoon, he hears Rea wailing about how she wished her dad would stop taking pictures of her undressed, and Chihiro make a louder gasp than he meant to. Rea talks to him afterward pleading that he won't tell anybody else about her secret life, and that she would help him with his potion if that's the only way he will keep it from leaking out. He agrees, and they start working together on finding out the mysterious ingredient that was torn from the pages of the book. Unfortunately, that is all I may confide. Read the manga or watch the anime if you are interested!
