Popular Clone: The Clone Chronicles #1

Popular Clone: The Clone Chronicles #1

By M.E. Castle

Fisher Bas is a 6th grader who gets tormented by a group of three kids that he calls the Vikings. They are always waiting for him, to bash him on the head with the biggest book they can find, give him a swirly or something else along those lines. One day, Fisher just gets tired of it. So he comes up with a solution-cloning himself with the AGH (Advanced Growth Hormones) that his mom invented, which is something that world-known Dr. X(ander, no, I am not kidding! his name is Xander!) wants to get his hands on. After a sleepless weekend, lots of work and many different attempts, Fisher creates his clone. When his clone comes to life, he thinks a woman from a Spot-Rite ad is his mother so Fisher creates a fantasy for his clone to believe-that they are trying to get their mother back and they have to go to a place to train (AKA Middle School) for their enemies. Then, after a few days, Two (Fisher’s clone’s name) becomes more popular than him! He has friends, is known around school and stands up to the Vikings. Can Fisher change Two’s ways before something bad happens and they realize Two is not Fisher? In a wacky middle-grade story of adventure and clones, Fisher strives to be as good as his clone, and fights the evil Dr. X after a very shocking twist in the plot in a wonderful debut. What I thought about it: Popular Clone was a great book. I think this was a strong debut for M.E. Castle, and fans of middle-grade sci-fi will enjoy it. I have been reading a lot of sci-fi lately; Mila 2.0, Cinder, Scarlet–they all have something to do with sciency stuff like clones, androids and cyborgs. I thinking the idea of cloning yourself is interesting-and very complicated. It would be hard to keep a secret that there are two “You’s” out there. I also loved the other science aspects in this book: the inventions that Fisher has created and the Bas’ garden. The tomatos are the size of beach balls, and the bananas are the size of baseball bats. It’s like taking your garden and multiplying the size! Now that is awesome. I loved the drawings throughout the book of Fisher’s inventions-they help you understand what they are talking about/using in the story. Also, the battle at the end was pretty epic, with lots of action and chases. The book ends with a BIG cliffhanger, though. Thankfully I had the second book available BWAHAHA! So overall, a great book for fans of middle-grade stories and adventures. Ivy Takes Care

Ivy Takes Care

By Rosemary Wells

Ivy Takes Care by Rosemary Wells is a very cute story. Ivy is a young girl in 1949 who lives on a ranch. Ivy's family doesn't have much money, so when Ivy wants to buy a ring for her best friend, she had to buy it herself. To make money, Ivy becomes a pet sitter and takes care of a horse, trains a show dog, and nurses a fox back to health. Overall, this book is a cute, relatively quick read. Also, I noticed that Rosemary Wells, the author, wrote that TV show Max and Ruby.

The Center of Everything

The Center of Everything

By Linda Urban

I would recommend this book for sixth graders and up because it contains characters that middle school students can really relate to. The book tells the story of 11 year old Ruby Pepperdine who feels like her whole world is turning upside down. The book follows her as she struggles with her feelings that nothing is the way it is supposed to be. She is deeply sad because her grandmother has died and she feels like she let her down because she didn't understand her last words to her which were "listen, its all coming together". She also finds herself caught between between two friends. Her best friend Lucy isn't even talking to her because of her new friendship with a boy named Nero. But that friendship isn't going very well either. Somehow Ruby decides that if she can just read her winning essay at the town parade the wish she makes when she turns 12 will make everything right again. The story is written from the perspective of a third person narrator which made it a little difficult for me to really connect to Ruby as much as I might I have if it was written from her point of view. But I liked the way the author followed Ruby's personal journey as she tries to make some sense of her world by figuring out what her grandmother was trying to tell her .

Lenny Cyrus, School Virus

Lenny Cyrus, School Virus

By Joe Schreiber

In Lenny Cyrus School Virus Lenny Cyrus shrinks himself down to a microscopic level trying to prove that he can do something that nobody else has done before and that completely breaks all laws of physics, to his parents who are both Nobel Prize winners. Lenny goes inside Zooey Andrews’s body and gets stuck in there for six hours with a virus named Astro. He meets a steroid called Lug and turns him into a caffeine molecule eventually every steroid wants to be turned into a caffeine molecule too. After a while of watching how Lenny did it, they all learn how to do it themselves and every one turns itself into a caffeine molecule; completely disrupting things. When Lenny makes it up to Zooeys brain he makes it across the blood brain barrier but leaves a hole letting a virus get into her brain. The virus, starts slowly eating away at all her white blood cells and slowly killing her in the process. In the meanwhile Zooeys putting on a play that she’s been working on for two years and cant afford to get sick now. I think that this book is an okay book. Although its cover doesn’t look as good as it could have been, and the title isn’t the best either, the book isn't as bad as it seems when you first look at it.
