First Day Jitters

First Day Jitters

By Julie Danneberg

First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg is funny and I can really connect to it! I think other kids will be able to connect to it too. It's about a girl named Sarah Hartwell who doesn't want to get out of bed on the first day of school. She has all kinds of excuses to try to not go to school, but Mr. Hartwell makes her go anyway. The surprise ending will shock readers! I think students will connect with Sarah. Most kids have been nervous on the first day of school before also. On my first day at a new school, my mom had to force me to get in the car. She had to walk me to my new class because I was so scared. Sarah acted the same way. Mr. Hartwell had to force her into the car too. The principal even had to walk Sarah to her classroom! I also thought the book was funny because Sarah was trying EVERYTHING to stay at home. The pictures show silly ways she tried to get out of going to school. If you are looking for a funny book that will help you get through your first day of school, you should definitely read First Day Jitters!

Slam! (Coretta Scott King Author Award Winner)

Slam! (Coretta Scott King Author Award Winner)

By Walter Dean Myers

The book I have read is called Slam and it is by Walter Dean Meyers. This book is about a 16 year old person called Greg Harris. He is also known as slam because of basketball. Slam loves playing basketball as he has joined a new school. Despite his talents, his teachers notice that his grades have declined. Now, Slam has to figure out what to do before he gets kicked off the team. My opinion of the book is that it is a good book. The reason why I say that it is a good book is that it really brings out the emotions of the character and what the character is feeling on the inside. Slam is realistic fiction because this could actually happen to someone or it is based off someone, but it has some fictional parts to it. An audience that would read this book would be an audience that likes sports and would enjoy a book with a lot of details because that is what this book exactly contains. A external conflict in the book was that Slam's friends are starting to turn on him because he left his old school and the think he is different. An internal conflict is that Slam is deciding whether to go back to his old school or not and it is fighting the insides of him.

By Stephanie S. Tolan

The greatest biography i have ever read. Its about a girl who was in a terrible accident that has scarred her and her leg for life. When she goes to a lake for summer vacation, she meets a golden dog she calls, coyote. He helps her regain her strength to get over the incident while she helps him to become 'tamed' dog. As these two give each other courage to move towards something great, they bond a never-ending friendship.

Grace for President

I decided to read this book because I wanted to see how a little girl could be brave enough to run for President! This book was awesome. Grace overcame her fears and learned that girls can be President.

May B.

May B.

By Caroline Starr Rose

The book that I am reading is called MayB by:Caroline Starr Rose. This book takes place in the 19th century and it is about a 12 year old girl named Mavis Elizabeth Betterly (May B) who lives on the prairies of Kansas. Her parents send her 15 miles away from her home to help a neighbor with some chores just until Christmas. But the people she was staying with abandoned her, so she is forced to prepare for the long and harsh winter alone. I thought that MayB was a book to help the reader if they had struggles too because May B was always afraid and insecure about her abilities, later on in the book she has to overcome her fears and insecurities. And this was supposed to show that the reader or anybody can do the same. This genre is realistic fiction because the things in the book didn't actually happen to that specific character (s), but It could have happened to anybody during that time period. The kind of audience that would like to read this book is the audience that likes survival stories. The kind of audience that would like to read this book is the audience that likes survival stories because May B has to survive the long and harsh winter. An internal conflict in this book is when May B struggles to overcome her fears and insecurities. An external conflict in the book was when May B had to prepare for the long and harsh winter when she was abandoned. I would give this book 3 1/2 stars because it was interesting but also a little boring(especially in the beginning).

The Underdogs

The Underdogs

By Mike Lupica

Really good. The kids in this small town feel real. 'Its not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog" stays with me. Really good story. Hannah really shows that girls can play to. Which I like (i am a girl who has experienced rough times with playing in games because of that.)
