A Crooked Kind of Perfect

A Crooked Kind of Perfect

By Linda Urban

I loved this book so so so so so much!!!!!!! It is a great realistic fiction story!!! It is about a girl, who really wants to play the piano, but then she ends up playing the organ instead. In this story it tells how you don't always get exactly what you want, but sometimes, different is perfect. Since I play the piano, I know what Zoe means by you have to work hard in piano, you can't sit back and relax. My favorite character in this book is Zoe because she is very understandable about things like how when in the beginning when she couldn't get a piano, she learned the organ instead. I also liked how it ended, but I don't want to give it away.

Under the Mesquite

Under the Mesquite

By Guadalupe Garcia Mccall

Under the Mesquite, by Guadalupe Garcia McCall, is the well descriptive story about Lupita and her family and all of the new challenges and barriers that are introduced because of her mother’s recently diagnosed cancer, and how the group tries to deal and overcome these barriers within their lives. To start off, a majority of Under the Mesquite takes place in Mexico, Lupita’s home country, however, as a six year-old, she and the rest of her family had to move to los Estados Unidos, or the United States because of her father’s newfound job there. In this novel, the most important character of the plot is Lupita, first born out of the eight children conceived by her papí and her mamí, is the one who will be the narrator of the story, telling all of her experiences, both good and bad, in a manner that will make you feel very close and connected with her. The other characters, as previously mentioned are her mamí and papí, who are Lupita’s parents and will also end up being very important to the book’s plot. Finally, the rest include Lupita’s seven younger siblings which are (in order by age): Analiza, Victoria, Paco--all born in Mexico, Tita, Juanita, Rosita, and her baby brother Benito--all of which born in the United States. The plot of the book, Under the Mesquite, is about Lupita, and her brand new challenges that she and her family members must face, all because of her mother’s cancer slowly developing within her. Overtime, she will have to learn how to overcome these decisions and how to accept change within the world and the events that are taking place, and soon will have to take on a new responsibility. McCall’s writing style is very unique when compared to many run-of-the-mill books, as it takes the reader through the massive journey that is of Lupita, with freeform poetry. With this unexpected decision, it still makes the best of it, with McCall, the writing is very descriptive, generating a nearly perfect atmosphere for every single event that takes place, all while giving us a good look at a majority of the main characters’ personalities. Overall, McCall is a very well experienced writing, taking us on a wonderful, descriptive journey through her writing. Here are some quotes from the book to show how well written this novel truly is: “The mesquites listens quietly-as if the poems budding in my heart, then blossoming in my notebook, are Scripture-and never tells a soul the things I write” “All the girls around me dropped their scarlet mouths wide-open, like a circle of Venus flytraps, and laughed hysterically at me” Under the Mesquite by Guadalupe Garcia McCall, is a very well made novel. Just by how simply lovely the description is in each part of the book makes it seem as if you are right in Lupita’s shoes and experiencing how she feels, all of the conflicts within her life, and the way Lupita and her family deals with her Mother's newfound cancer. The novel made me feel as if I was facing all of the hardships she’s facing, sometimes making me filled with glee, others with pity, and sometimes even sorrow. Overall, this book is nearly flawless, having amazing description of the situation. To conclude, her are some extra bits of fact that you might not of known about the author, Guadalupe Garcia McCall, and the simply stunning novel that she has thought of: The novel’s plot is based of McCall’s real-life experience during her teenage years and all of the difficult barriers and challenges that came with this time in her life Under the Mesquite won the Pura Belprė Award in 2012 for creating a novel that best portrays, affirms, Latino cultural experience.

Dorko the Magnificent

Dorko the Magnificent

By Andrea Beaty

Robbie Darko wants to be a world-famous magician. He has done several acts, some of them in the talent show, but they haven’t always turned out so great. Today is his mom’s birthday and he wants to do a special magic trick for her-pulling the tablecloth out from under the china set on the table. A few days after the bad turnout of the trick, Grandma Melvin, Robbie’s grandma, offers to teach him magic lessons. With the talent show coming close, will Grandma Melvin help him? Or will she just sit and watch The Wheel Of Fortune while she is laughing at him? In a enjoyable and magical story, Beaty keeps fans cheering for her and Robbie until the very last page. My thoughts: I really loved this book. The cover is pretty awesome and you want to know something weird? The first time I saw the cover I thought the rabbit was a grandma. Call me crazy, but I promise you. I loved all the magic in this story; Robbie Darko is trying so hard to end his years at Elementary School with a bang, so he can be remembered there for years to come. The grandma is so crazy; in a good way. She thinks that the “zoysia grass is attacking her” and yells at the TV. She is such a character, and was written very skillfully. The added bits of humor in this Middle-Grade story were wonderful, and I think I will check out more books by Andrea Beaty.

When Andi and Colin are in the attic they fined a trunk. The trunk that belonged to Andora starts the hole mystery. The mystery being what happened to Andora Boggs.

The Center of Everything

The Center of Everything

By Linda Urban

I would recommend this book for sixth graders and up because it contains characters that middle school students can really relate to. The book tells the story of 11 year old Ruby Pepperdine who feels like her whole world is turning upside down. The book follows her as she struggles with her feelings that nothing is the way it is supposed to be. She is deeply sad because her grandmother has died and she feels like she let her down because she didn't understand her last words to her which were "listen, its all coming together". She also finds herself caught between between two friends. Her best friend Lucy isn't even talking to her because of her new friendship with a boy named Nero. But that friendship isn't going very well either. Somehow Ruby decides that if she can just read her winning essay at the town parade the wish she makes when she turns 12 will make everything right again. The story is written from the perspective of a third person narrator which made it a little difficult for me to really connect to Ruby as much as I might I have if it was written from her point of view. But I liked the way the author followed Ruby's personal journey as she tries to make some sense of her world by figuring out what her grandmother was trying to tell her .
