Americans celebrate Presidents day because it is a day to celebrate all the presidents. People pay tribute to the past and current presidents. Before 1968, Americans celebrated two holidays. February 12th and 22nd were to celebrate Abraham Lincoln's and George Washington's birthdays. In 1971, there was a law that on the third Monday in February every year, people would celebrate all past and present presidents.
