A National Book Award Finalist offers an intense portrait of an abusive relationship.

Johanna is steadfast, patient, reliable; the go-to girl, the one everyone can count on. But always being there for others can’t give Johanna everything she needs—it can’t give her Reeve Hartt.

Reeve is fierce, beautiful, wounded, elusive; a flame that draws Johanna’s fluttering moth. Johanna is determined to get her, against all advice, and to help her, against all reason. But love isn’t always reasonable, right?

In the precarious place where attraction and need collide, a teenager experiences the dark side of a first love, and struggles to find her way into a new light.

This book is about as intense as it gets. Johanna becomes intoxicated by Reeve, who has had a traumatic childhood. They enter into relationship when Johanna tutors Reeves autistic brother, Robbie. Reeves childhood trauma manifests itself in abusive behaviour from Reeve and Johanna takes it in the name of 'love'. The author aimed to paint Reeve as the abuser and Johanna as the victim/survivor, but it's important to recognise that Johanna's borderline obsession with Reeve is not healthy either. Despite their behaviour, you genuinely want what is best for the characters and you will most definitely cry. Not for the faint hearted, or anyone younger than 9th or 10th grade - even if they are mature. As someone who has been reading books well above my age level since I was a child (I'm in 12th grade now), even I would say that it would have been too intense for me until I was midway through high school.

I have not read this book but to me it looks like a really good book. It reminds me of a love story. Write back if you agree.

I decided to read this book because it sounded interesting and it was interesting. When I saw the cover I thought it was going to be a boring love story, but it was an awesome book. It is about two girls that fall in love. I thought this book was awesome because Johanna went through a lot of drama with Reeve and she still wants to be with her even though Reeve says she can't.
