In the land of La Paz (which translates to peace), and the name is completely ironic to the story. The city is separated into two parts; the City of Stone and Plaster is where the rich reside and the poor live in the huts living off of the meager money earned from selling pearls. The story follows the tragedy of Kino, his wife Juana, and baby boy Coyotito. On one trip for pearl fishing, Kino discovers a pearl of enormous size and value. However, the discovery of The Pearl of the World only brings bad fortune to his family. Everyone turns against them in envy, and the pearl buyers attempt to cheat Kino for offering only ridiculously low prices for the pearl. Kino dreamed of a life of luxury and happiness, but most importantly, he wants to send his boy to school. Education is the power to the knowledge that the poor people of the village lacked. The avarice for the pearl throughout the story goes too far when thieves attempt to hurt the family. As a result, the little boy lost his life and the pearl is returned to the ocean. The message between greed and evil is shown clearly in the novel and is beautifully written. John Steinbeck is clearly a skilled writer.

I would make homework as an option to take only if the student is struggling in the class or wants a challenge to go further in the subject. Many students have clubs, athletics, and musical commitments after school so it is very difficult to manage time for extra schoolwork. If it were to be mandatory, I would assign it as a study tool before subject assessments or final exams. Homework should be something can kids can feel good about to keep striving to be curious and push limits without stress.
