Yonder is a girl, who became mute after her mother died and doesn't talk to anybody. She becomes close to the Shetland pony next door, who is overweight, gross, and missing an eye. She cares for the unloved pony, names it DIRT, and they are each others' friends, and it seems as if the pony can actually hear her, even though she doesn't speak.
