A VOICE IN THE WIND IS AN INSPIRING STORY THAT TOOK place during the end of the Roman Empire, about seventy years after the death of Christ. Readers can clearly see the comparisons between then and now in terms of faith, poverty, and inequality.
This book tells the story of a slave girl, Hadassah, who after the attack on Jerusalem, is sent to Rome to serve Julia, a rich and egocentric girl from a wealthy merchant’s family. Hadassah is a Christian and tries her best to follow the teachings of Jesus, but her owners are against her religion, so she has to conceal it. To survive, she had to convince them she is not a Christian, despite being a pious and pure girl.
A great focus of the novel is the love between Hadassah and Marcus, Julia’s brother. Problems arise, though, when he initially refuses to accept Christianity. Meanwhile, Julia met Atretes, a German chief who receives great fame. They fall in love and plan to marry after gaining their freedom, but he suddenly refuses her because she was rude, arrogant, and did not have faith. The Valerian family, except Julia, eventually comes to accept Hadassah’s religion after they saw the kind and beautiful ways Hadassah lived out her faith. Marcus asks to marry Hadassah, but she refuses him in order to obey God. Later on, she was punished by Julia to be eaten by lions.
A Voice in the Wind shows the internal struggle of Hadassah. Francine Rivers uses the story’s dialogue to explain the characters deeply. The conversations between Marcus and Hadassah show his true love and care for her and her own ignorance. Readers also observe Julia’s rudeness and roughness in her interactions with others.
