The FIFA Men’s World Cup will return to North America in 2026 for the first time since 1994. Played across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the tournament will be the first to feature 48 national teams, up from 32 in previous World Cups. These teams will play 104 matches over 39 days, making it the biggest World Cup in history.
The championship runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026, and is jointly hosted across 16 cities. Eleven of these are in the United States, three in Mexico, and two in Canada. The opening match takes place on June 11 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with hosts Mexico playing. The final will be held on July 19 at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The Group Stage
The competition begins with a group stage. The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four. Each team plays three matches, facing every other team in its group once. Teams earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss.
At the end of the group stage, the top two teams from each group automatically advance. This accounts for 24 teams in total. The eight best third-place teams across all groups also qualify. This brings the total number of teams in the next round to 32. If teams have the same number of points in the group stage, FIFA uses tiebreakers such as goal difference and goals scored to determine the final standings.
The Knockout Stage
From the Round of 32 onward, the tournament becomes a single-elimination knockout competition. This means a team is eliminated if they lose a match. This round features 16 matches, with winners advancing to the Round of 16. Teams then continue through the quarterfinals, the semifinals, and finally the championship match.
If knockout matches are tied after 90 minutes, they go to 30 minutes of extra time. Should the score remain unchanged, the match is decided by a penalty shootout. Players take turns shooting one-on-one against the goalkeeper. Each team gets five attempts, and the team with the most goals wins. If the score is still tied after the five attempts, teams take turns until one scores and the other misses.
The World Cup champion will be decided in the final on July 19, 2026, at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. With 48 teams chasing football’s biggest prize, the race for the title has never been more open. Will Argentina become the first modern team to win back-to-back World Cups, or will there be a new champion? Football fans around the world will be watching with bated breath.
