An autonomous robot made history on April 19, 2026, when it beat 12,000 human runners and 300 fellow robots in a half marathon at China’s Beijing E-Town. The aptly-named Lightning pulled away early and never slowed down. It finished the 13.1-mile (21.1 km) race in just 50 minutes and 26 seconds. The top human finisher, Zhao Haijie, crossed the line about 10 minutes later.
“It just went whoosh right past me,” Zhao later said.
In addition to winning the race, Lightning also beat the human half marathon world record by nearly seven minutes. Jacob Kiplimo set that record in a race in Lisbon, Portugal, in March 2026.
However, not all of the robots ran as smoothly. Some started strong but quickly wobbled or even fell within the first few steps. Others made it further but struggled over the long distance. They veered off course or needed assistance to stay upright. A few crossed the finish line only to stumble into barriers moments later.
Despite these mishaps, the robots performed far better than those in Beijing E-Town’s first race, held in 2025. Many of those early machines struggled with overheating, balance issues, or breakdowns during the 13.1-mile course. Only six of the 21 participating robots managed to finish. In contrast, more than 100 robots completed the race this year. Also, in 2025, the first robot took over 2 hours and 40 minutes to cross the finish line. The progress shows just how much technology has improved in a single year.
The half marathon is part of a wider effort at Beijing E-Town, formally known as the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area. Established in 1994, it is a testing ground for robotics, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing. The half marathon reflects its goal of testing new technology in real-world conditions.
