The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has quickly become the highest-grossing film of 2026 so far. Released on April 1, it has earned over $750 million worldwide in less than a month. The sequel follows the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That film made over $1.3 billion worldwide and helped establish Mario as a major Hollywood franchise.
The new film expands the world beyond the Mushroom Kingdom. Drawing from the Super Mario Galaxy games, it follows Mario and Luigi on a new adventure in space. As they travel across planets and star systems, they are joined by Princess Peach. Along the way, the group faces Bowser and Bowser Jr., who threaten the galaxy. The film centers on Mario and his friends. But it also includes several new characters. These additions help expand the Mario universe without changing its core group of heroes.
The movie opened to lukewarm reviews from critics. But that did not stop fans from turning out in large numbers. Part of the film's success comes from the clear storyline, fast pace and vibrant environments. They draw in even viewers unfamiliar with the Mario games. At the same time, Mario fans are rewarded with subtle nods to the games. The film also has broad appeal across generations. Adults who grew up with Mario are now bringing younger audiences to theaters.
Mario began as a simple video game character in early arcade games. Over the years, the friendly plumber has become one of the most recognizable figures in entertainment. He has appeared in dozens of games across multiple generations.
The success of the movie franchise highlights Mario’s transition from video games to the big screen. It is a testament to how a character created in 1981 can still thrive more than four decades later.
