Heck: Where the Bad Kids Go

Heck: Where the Bad Kids Go

By Dale E. Basye

One day, 11-year old Milton Fauster and his 13-year old sister Marlo are in the Grizzly Mall of Generica, Kansas. They go into a store where Marlo shoplifts some lip gloss, which she surreptitiously stashes in Milton's backpack without his knowledge. A mall security officer spots this, and tries to accost the two. As Marlo and Milton are running through the mall with the security guard chasing them, Milton realizes Marlo tricked him into being an accomplice. Pausing for a moment in front of a giant marshmallow statue of a Grizzly Bear, and Milton spots Damian Ruffino, his extremely unhygienic tormentor, school bully, and all -around delinquent, sticking dynamite in the marshmallow grizzly's behind. Before the mall security guards can catch up with them, the marshmallow grizzly bear explodes prematurely, and Milton, Marlo, and Damian all die. The last thing they see is flaming marshmallow all over the mall. The next thing they know, Milton and Marlo are holding hands and plummeting downward and Milton feels a slight sting. When he and Marlo land, they find themselves in Limbo, the waiting area for the Nine Circles of Heck, which include Rapacia, Blimpo, Fibble, Snivel, Precocia, Lipptor (Wise Acres), Sadia, and Dupli-City. Because of her sins (e.g., the shoplifting) Marlo has been sent to a sort of "lite" version of Hell reserved for bad kids, called "Heck"; Milton, apparently, has been judged guilty by association and sent there with his sister. Processed through the afterlife's terrible bureaucracy, Marlo and Milton are conveyed to a nightmare of a school in Heck, presided over by principal Bea "Elsa" Bubb, who torments her charges with pretty much the worse things they can imagine in a school. Milton and Marlo are separated and Milton meets Virgil, who befriends him, and the two plot an escape from heck and return to Earth and the land of the living. But Damien, who has been bad enough that he has started to rise in the hierarchy of Heck, is sent after them and foils their plans, landing them back in Heck. Marlo, meanwhile, has been causing her own brand of chaos by organizing a resistance among the girls in the heckish school, causing Principal Bubb to decide that the Fauster siblings are problem children. She decides to deal with them by sending them to the next lower circle of Heck: Rapacia.

30 Days of No Gossip

30 Days of No Gossip

By Stephanie Faris

I haven't read it, and I probably never will. It's the ultimate girl book. It has all the things I hate in books. I hate books about gossip, I hate books about crushes (I'm not sure if it's about crushes, but it definitely has crushes in it), and I hate books about girls. But I might read to confirm the fact I don't like it.

Echo the Copycat (Goddess Girls)

Echo the Copycat (Goddess Girls)

By Joan Holub, Suzanne Williams

Echo is a forest-mountain nymph and the new girl at Mount Olympus Academy. She is a little nervous, so she tries to mimic all of the gestures, expressions, and slang of the cool MOA students. While imitation is supposed to be the best form of flattery, Echo’s chattiness doesn’t exactly endear her to her fellow classmates—in fact, it has the opposite effect! Will she be able to find a way to be herself and become friends with the students around her?

Persephone the Daring (Goddess Girls)

Persephone the Daring (Goddess Girls)

By Joan Holub, Suzanne Williams

The new mortal boy Orpheus has swept the entire girl population in Mount Olympus Academy off their feet! With a clear, lovely voice and beautiful lyre-playing skills, Orpheus looks and sounds the part of a heartbreaker popstar. He's one of the top rising musicians on Olympus, but after a freak accident, his girlfriend Eurydice is suddenly taken into the Underworld. Heartbroken, Orpheus loses all motivation. He knows that once you go into the Underworld, you never come out. Persephone's dating Hades, and, seeing Orpheus so dismal, she tries to help Orpheus lead Eurydice out of the Underworld. But can helping another romantic relationship break her own? Fast-paced and fun, this is one of my favorite Goddess Girls books in the series!

Aphrodite the Diva (Goddess Girls)

Aphrodite the Diva (Goddess Girls)

By Joan Holub, Suzanne Williams

Aphrodite has always been, without a doubt, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. And she looks the part too; with her long, flowing blond hair, crystal-clear blue eyes, and impeccable fashion style, she's bombarded with compliments this way and that. But when Aphrodite visits Egypt, she comes face-to-face with her stiffest competition yet (though that's not saying much since she's never had competition before in the first place): Isis, the Egyptian goddess of love and beauty. Exotic, regal, and coveted, Isis clearly gives Aphrodite a run for her money. The two goddessgirls are desperate to face off once and for all to see who can claim the true spot of "the goddess of love and beauty." So, while strolling through the mortal realm, they find a worthy trial: Pygmalion, a bitter middle-aged man who refuses to even look at the girls in the agora. But there's more than what meets the eye. As Isis and Aphrodite race to find Pygmalion's perfect girl, Aphrodite finds out the missing puzzle piece of Pyg's story, but can she still pull through or will she sacrifice her spot as "the love goddess" for Pygmalion's true love of his life? Exciting, sweet, and fast-paced, this has long since been one of my favorite books of all time!

Artemis the Brave (Goddess Girls)

Artemis the Brave (Goddess Girls)

By Joan Holub, Suzanne Williams

This book was awesome. I already was a Greek geek but still this book was awesome! The book is about goddess' in their child part life when they are in an academy. The main character in this book is Artemis, goddess of the hunt and the moon. She starts liking this new mortal in her school. His name is Orion. This is Artemis' first crush. She keeps on trying to make him like her and turns out he kinda does . Turns out he was trying to use her as an advantage to get win. When she finally realizes that, she pulls a prank on him. Read the book to find out about the prank. This book is just always awesome. They have a series about them but not just Artemis. There's Athena, Artemis, Aphrodite, and Persephone. Even though most of the facts aren't true the author is still cool. (The author is making a lot of the facts not true about Greek myths because I think she wants to minimize the violence.) The only problem is it is too girly. They should make a boy series and call it God-boys or something. Still READ it. It is so worth reading for!!!
