Outbreak (The 39 Clues: Super Special, Book 1)

Outbreak (The 39 Clues: Super Special, Book 1)

By C. Alexander London

This new installment in the Cahill family secrets certainly lives up to its predecessors. Dan and Amy Cahill are having fun living with their cousins and pulling off secret operations, and taking turns being the leader of the group. Then one day the CIA knocks on their door-they have a new mission. The government had been working on a top-secret disease that could knock out millions. But it was stolen by one of their own, the traitor Sinead Starling. So Dan, Amy and the other Cahills set off on an adventure to retrieve the poison and try to find out what Sinead Starling is about to. But finding out the truth might be harder than they thought, and there are others out there against the Cahills. Will the Cahills be able to stop the outbreak of a disease so powerful that it could wipe out the world? And find the truth about their rogue cousin? One part I liked international places in this book-specifically Cuba, which Sinead is targeting. The government plays a big part, and the tense relationship between the US and Cuba as well. It just made everything a little bit more interesting and tricky. Like other books in the 39 Clues, Super-special Outbreak is hair-raising, with with twists around every corner. I couldn't put it down! I hope there are more coming! I recommend this book(and this series), to anybody 4th grade and up. I believe for most younger than that the book would be too violent. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

The Genius Files: Mission Unstoppable

The Genius Files: Mission Unstoppable

By Dan Gutman

Novel Pending

This book was surprisingly good. My family and I go on lots of long car trips and we like to listen to audiobooks, but it can be very difficult to find stories that match all of our interests. Since this site is just for the book itself I won't rate the audiobook itself (read by Micheal Goldstrom) but I have to say it was delivered wonderfully. I also won't go into the plot either because, for one thing, there's a summary right there, and I don't want to spoil anything. The Genius Files, as a series overall, can get monotonous. You could say the story is broken into chapter clusters, which all go about the same way. The McDonalds have been driving for hours when Mrs. McDonald suddenly announces an oddball tourist trap that she can use on her popular and ridiculous site, Amazing but True. Dr. McDonald, Coke, and Pepsi all protest, but end up following along anyway. Somehow or another, the twins get separated from their parents and are confronted by their health teacher, Mrs. Higgins, or the nefarious "Bowler Dudes" who attempt to kill them in an absurd way, (including being trapped in a burning school, getting buried alive in the Singing Sand Dunes, getting lowered into a bubbling vat of SPAM, getting shocked to death with electricity, lowered into boiling oil, and having a variety of things dropped onto their heads including a chest of drawers, a concrete brain, and a dead cow.) but they escape, and Coke rips his shirt in the process. Despite the cookie-cutter format, it can be said that the book is full of tidbit trivia, spot-on humor, and defiant action. I would recommend to upper-elementary kids and families looking to have a good time. I would give it four and a half stars, but say in this instance, it rounds up.

Lemons

Lemons

By Melissa Savage

Have you ever seen Bigfoot? Tobin Sky plans to. Lemonade LIberty Witt is a girl whose mom has recently passed away, and now she must live with her grandfather, Charlie. Here she meets Tobin Sky, CEO of Bigfoot Detectives Inc. After taking the oath, Lem is now an assistant at Bigfoot Detective Inc. They may have a clue when a resident of Willow Creek calls. Every clue gets Lem closer to solving the Bigfoot mystery, and accepting her new family. This was a cool book, with an interesting idea. I have never read a fictional book on the topic of Bigfoot. The characters were also very interesting. However, at time you cannot relate to the characters very well. You should try this book!

Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie

Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie

By Jordan Sonnenblick

If you loved Rodman Philbrick's The Mighty or Gennifer Choldenko's Al Capone series, you will absolutely LOVE this book! Steven is your average 8th grader, whose not popular, but not unpopular either. He plays drums for a city band, likes a hot girl, and has a hyperactive brother named Jeffery. His life turns around when he hears four words. "Your brother has leukemia." As Jeffrey is in and out of the hospital, Steven suffers in many areas of his life: school, family, girls, money, and leukemia. But if one thing helps Steven get out of whack, it's Jeffery who is always there. Somehow, Steven gets through things by what his guidance counselor told him, "Instead of agonizing about the things you can't change, why don't you try working on the things you CAN change?" Through this one quote, Steven brings up his grades, loses his lackadaisical attitude, shaves his hair to help Jeffrey cope with the loss of his hair, and ends up becoming the popular kid by supporting his brother. When a fundraiser comes up supporting Jeffrey, and Steven has to play drums, he is prepared for this. But when Jeffrey has to go to the hospital right before his big solo, Steven leaves to support his brother. This story really, truly shows the effects of love.

Vampirates: Empire of Night

Vampirates: Empire of Night

By Justin Somper

Holy Cow!!! My favorite in the series yet, by far. I can`t believe how Justin Somper came up with such a great idea for a book series! I`m surprised its not more popular- I think it is better then Percy Jackson or Harry Potter (which are both amazing book series, too)

Goodbye Stranger (Boston Globe-Horn Book Honors (Awards))

Goodbye Stranger (Boston Globe-Horn Book Honors (Awards))

By Rebecca Stead

Bridge survives after a dangerous car accident, who's wondering why she's still alive. Meanwhile, her best friend Tabitha and Emily, seems to have some other issues on internet and having "boy" friends. Also, everything seems different for Sherm Russo this year, when he gets to know Bridge, he wonders: what does it means to fall for a girl, "as a friend"? Seventh grade is a really complicated and hard time for teenagers. It's when people will want to have their own rights, and their own love. These issues and conflicts that happen in this book also happen in real world. Such as secretly taking "not so inappropriate" photos, and send it to your boy friend. However, never trust anyone when you haven't known them really well. After I finish this book, I realise how scary the internet is, it can send any information to everyone in a second. But all of these issues start from your own decision.
