Thoughtful, strong-willed sixth-grader Merci Suarez navigates difficult changes with friends, family, and everyone in between in a resonant new novel from Meg Medina.

Merci Suarez knew that sixth grade would be different, but she had no idea just how different. For starters, Merci has never been like the other kids at her private school in Florida, because she and her older brother, Roli, are scholarship students. They don’t have a big house or a fancy boat, and they have to do extra community service to make up for their free tuition. So when bossy Edna Santos sets her sights on the new boy who happens to be Merci’s school-assigned Sunshine Buddy, Merci becomes the target of Edna’s jealousy. Things aren't going well at home, either: Merci’s grandfather and most trusted ally, Lolo, has been acting strangely lately — forgetting important things, falling from his bike, and getting angry over nothing. No one in her family will tell Merci what's going on, so she’s left to her own worries, while also feeling all on her own at school. In a coming-of-age tale full of humor and wisdom, award-winning author Meg Medina gets to the heart of the confusion and constant change that defines middle school — and the steadfast connection that defines family.

A heartwarming story...beautiful, well written, and a great representation of real life. You will immediately fall in love with this book! Merci Suárez doesn’t live in a giant mansion. Neither does she own every latest item or fashion trend. Instead, she lives with her large family in a small house called Las Casitas, and attends a fancy private school only because of her scholarship. Unlike all the other girls at Seaward Pines Academy, Merci isn’t rich...and that’s always made it harder for her to fit in. But sixth grade is more different than she thought it would be...because it could take a turn for the worse at any moment. The most popular girl at Seaward Pines, Edna Santos, is trying to get in between other people’s friendships—and that includes Merci. And that’s not the worst part. Lately, her grandfather has been behaving with a different attitude, being forgetful and vague. She doesn’t know what happened to him...but the answer is scary. Merci’s life comes crashing down, as her world turns into a place of oblivion and strangeness. Her family is struggling more than ever. Can she help them? Read this book to find out!

I decided to read this book just because it looked like a good book. Surprise!!! It was great, also very well written. There is not a lot to say about this book without spoiling it. So just read it!

This book is about Merci Suárez and her challenges and adventures of life. At school, she has to deal with Edna, the “popular” kid, be a Sunshine Buddy, which means they show the new kids at Seaward around, and worry about her grandfather, Lolo, who has been acting strangely. He forgets their family’s names, falls off his bike, and wanders away without telling anybody. Merci has to be strong to go through this adventure! I reccommend this book to people who live like Merci, because you can go through anything.

This is a book about Merci and one day she comes home and her grandpa Lolo is in a police crusier. Lolo says it's just a mistake of mistaking the wrong set of twins to come home with him. Merci's life at school is getting harder too...Edna is a girl that is "popular" and Merci is friends with her. Merci gets assigned to her sunshine buddy Michael and Edna has a crush on him. With him coming home with Merci to get his costume fitted at her home because her grandma is good at making costumes Edna starts to get mean to Merci. Thats when she decides, is she really willing to be friends with Edna? When at home Lolo is starting to not fell well when they discover that her has a thing called...
