She’s finally taken the plunge, and Doreen learns that there are many options available to her. Life as a witch? Life are a werewolf? Life as a vampire? Which will she choose? Surely one of those choices will end the sad torment of bullying and abuse that ruins her life now. She also learns there are rules, important rules, rules particularly hard for a girl like Doreen to take. Worse, along with the temptation, is a maddeningly beautiful vampire boy named Josh who’s also maddeningly…well, just maddening! Doesn’t he understand how ready Doreen would be to throw herself at his feet if he just weren’t such a jerk?

Josh and the Rules is the third chapter of the thrilling new series The Misadventures of Doreen Drake, Vampire Wannabe from Polaris Young Adult Productions. It continues the story that began in Meet Doreen Drake and Hello Mr. Vampire. A troubled teenage girl decides the only way to fix the problems in her life is to find a vampire and convince him to change her into one, or at least to protect her from the bullies in her life and her other problems. Can it work? Can such a crazy idea be sane in the first place?

“Wow, sounds like work experience,” I say.
“Are you prepared for what you will endure?” he asks. His face is now very serious and his eyes have gone much darker.
“Yes. I’ve done my research,” I say defiantly.
“Have you also done research into smoking, Doreen?” He snaps the words and I flinch.
“What?” I reply.
“Have you looked at how harmful smoking is to your health?”
“Um, well I know that stuff, yes.” I say.
“Well hand them over then,” He replies.
His large hand opens up, as he moves it towards me. I take out the cigarette packet and hand it to him.
“You will not touch these again, Doreen,” he says.
“But, one of the girls gave me half the money. She will kill me,” I protest.
He cocks his head to the side and frowns at me. His glare is frightening. I won’t smoke again I decide.
“That’s what I like to see. A bit of compliance,” he booms.
The fire is beginning to dwindle and he stares at it intensely. The flames then begin to rise and lick the wood at his command. I can feel the heat again and I smile. Being a vampire would be very cool.
