This is my all-time favorite children's book. Read it over and over as a kid. It has a lot of good moral lessons built in, but above all it is about the importance of responsibility and commitment. It follows Horton the Elephant as he meets a bored bird who asks him to egg-sit for her. She flies off to vacation in Palm Beach while Horton endures harsh weather, taunts, and abduction. However, Horton never leaves the egg. The climax comes when the bird runs into Horton and the egg at the circus where they are being held and when the egg begins to hatch, decides she wants it back. I won't spoil the ending, but suffice to say it is more than satisfying. Best for elementary school aged kids, but like most Seuss books, enjoyable for adults as well.
