Brooklyn, 1875: Bird Mallon lives on Water Street where you can see the huge towers of the bridge to Manhattan being built. Bird wants nothing more in life than to be brave enough to be a healer, like her mother, Nory, to help her sister Annie find love, and to convince her brother, Hughie, to stop fighting for money with his street gang. And of course, she wishes that a girl would move into the empty apartment upstairs so that she can have a new friend close by.

But Thomas Neary and his Pop move in upstairs. Thomas who writes about his life in his journal--his father who spends each night at the Tavern down the street, the mother he wishes he had, and the Mallon family downstairs that he desperately wants to be a part of. Thomas, who has a secret that only Bird suspects, and who turns out to be the best friend Bird could ever have.

I really liked the book Water Street By Patricia Reilly Giff because of the characters their adventure. In the book a 13 year old girl named Bridget Mallon ( Bird for short ) lives in a small tenement with her mom, dad, sister, and brother the family has a very nice life. Bird wants to be a healer like her mom but after an incident with the milkman's boy, Bird is too scared to be a healer. But then a boy named Thomas Neary moves into the tenement above Bird. Thomas is the same age as Bird and Thomas really likes writing. Thomas moved into the tenement with his dad who he calls pop. When Bird and Thomas meet the are friends right away, one day Bird and Thomas go one a small adventure after a girl tells Bird her family is very sick and she needs help. Bird is scared to help the girls family but then Thomas restores her courage and bravery. If you like adventure and a little bit of scary stuff I think you will really like this book.

Water Street is truly a book you will never forget. In the book Water Street, a 13 year old girl named Bridget Malone (Bird) wants nothing more but to be a healer like her mother, Nory, but when a boy named Thomas Neary moves into her building, he starts to spend a lot of time with Bird's family. After a terrifying incident regarding a milkman's boy, she is not able to be a hero like her mother and is forever scared of being a healer, but when all eyes are on Bird to be the hero she must face her fears to save someone's life. On top of all that drama, Bird wants her sister, Annie, to find true love, and her brother, Hughie, to stop fighting for money, but when her and Thomas build an ever lasting friendship, he shows her that she is the real hero. Patricia Reilly Giff has blown me away once again with one of her amazing works. I love this book so much and I hope if you read this book you will like it too. Join Bird in her complicated life, and I will guarantee you will love it.
