THE FAMILIARS are the magical animal companions to a wizard or witch. When three young wizards-in-training get kidnapped by the evil queen of the land, it is up to their familiars to go a dangerous journey to rescue them. You'll meet Aldwyn, an orphan alley cat pretending to have telekinesis; Skylar, a know-it-all blue jay who can cast illusions; and Gilbert, a hapless tree frog with the ability to see visions of the future in pools of water. See what happens when these three animal assistants -- typically relegated to the background or found sitting quietly on their wizard's shoulders -- go on a heroic adventure of their own!

Very good book. There are not many books like this intended for this age group. The first chapter really helped us understand Aldwyn. The quest they go on is not very violent but it is still interesting. The part where Aldwyn discovers that there are real black and white telekinetic cats was good because it made us wonder whether this was just a coincidence or Aldwyn had accidentally revealed his past and had proved that his lie was true.

This book is amazing! Gilbert the tree frog is absolutely hilarious, especially when he's talking with Skylar the blue jay. It's an exciting adventure about magical animals who are only starting to build up their magical bonds with their human friends when an evil queen(or is it) whisks the humans away! The second and third books are even better, since there is a wonderfully hilarious howler monkey involved(Banshee).

Just started reading it.
